SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, July 7. (EUROPE PRESS) –
Territorial parties such as the Canarian Coalition, the Basque Nationalist Party, PDeCAT, UPL Soria ¡Ya! o The Pi-Proposta per les Illes Balears are now preparing to face general elections that coincide with a change of cycle in national politics, where the Popular Party is gradually displacing the PSOE, and where they highlight the importance of political movements territorial rights before a Government of Spain that they see exhausted.
In a round table on the territorial movements in the state political board, within the framework of the second edition of the Summer Campus of the Fundación Canarias Siglo XXI, the secretary general of the Canarian Coalition, Fernando Clavijo, considers that we are facing a change of cycle after what happened in the Andalusian elections, where the Popular Party led by Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla obtained an absolute majority.
Fernando Clavijo believes that what has happened in Andalusia is due to the sum of many causes, among others, “a certain arrogance of the coalition government of PSOE and Podemos; many inconsistencies; a lot of internal division; excessively overreacted decisions that have led to this government loses absolute credibility with the majority of the country’s citizens”.
Clavijo acknowledges that there is a lot of time left for the next general elections and that, until then, many things can happen, but he is sure that the Government formed by PSOE and Podemos “begins to have its days numbered”; so his concern now goes through “the next government.”
Regarding how the Canary Coalition faces the next general elections, Fernando Clavijo does not hide that the nationalist party has a “very hard time” to obtain good results compared to the regional elections, losing almost half of the votes, for which he considers that the majority of voters see these elections as a “presidential election”.
With regard to the Canary Islands, where the PSOE, NC, Sí Podemos and ASG govern, Clavijo affirms that it is already beginning to be seen that this government “not only does not give answers, but that we are going backwards compared to the achievements that the Canarian nationalists and people start to see it, so an opportunity opens up for us because people start to see and compare”.
For his part, the deputy spokesman for the UPL Soria Parliamentary Group ¡Ya! In the Cortes of Castilla y León, José Ángel Ceña, agreed that the last Andalusian elections have meant a “paradigm change” but he considers that they cannot be extrapolated to the rest of Spain, since the best of the polls that the PP has obtained Núñez Feijóo leads, throws 118 deputies, very far from the 176 he needs for an absolute majority.
For this reason, José Ángel Ceña understands that in the new General Courts that are constituted after the general elections of 2023 or the beginning of 2024 -as he believes could happen- the territorial axis can be very important, since he sees it obvious that the absolute majority it will be far. “We want to be there to follow the line of territorial parties such as the Canarian Coalition, the Basque Nationalist Party and PDeCAT,” said the parliamentary deputy spokesman for UPL Soria ¡Ya!.
The spokeswoman for the Basque Parliamentary Group EAJ-PNV in the Senate, Estefanía Beltrán, does not believe that there is a paradigm shift and agrees that the results of the Andalusian elections cannot be extrapolated from the rest of the State. She maintains that there is still time for the general elections, which she also believes “will take as long as possible”, and warns that until then “anything can happen”.
Estefanía Beltrán thinks that the appearance of new territorial parties has to do with the “lack of listening” of the big parties since the citizens feel “absolutely forgotten”. That is why she believes that the emergence of these parties is of great value, that “they are going to respond to the true demands and needs of society”, since managing from nearby “gives better levels of well-being to citizens”.
The president of El Pi-Proposta per les Illes Balears, Tolo Gili Nadal, highlighted the importance of the territorial parties having a presence in the Cortes Generales because “the only way for Madrid to respond is for us to be there giving a cane, showing our faces and making proposals. “Either we are in Madrid or we don’t paint anything,” he said.
Finally, the PDeCat deputy in Congress Sergi Miquel does not know if there is really a change of cycle in national politics, but he does agree that there is a trend of consolidation of the Popular Party. In any case, if this change of cycle finally occurs, he considers that it will be very important to see how the PP approaches the Catalan question, if it does so as Rajoy’s Popular Party, “where we will all be lost”, or “with a little more intelligence.
