The City Council of La Laguna highlighted yesterday that the municipality registers again this June very positive data in terms of employment and is already approaching the psychological barrier of 15,000 unemployed people, a decrease that places the municipality in similar figures those of the beginning of 2009. With a decrease in unemployment in all age groups, which is now at an interannual rate of 23.5%, hiring again presents very positive data in the town, with more than 2,900 new and a rise of almost 20% in one year.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, celebrated the registered results “because they mean that new job opportunities continue to be created for all citizens in our municipality, offering greater possibilities for progress and, with it, an improvement in quality of life”. The local councilor stressed that from the City Council “we will continue to make an effort to help everyone, especially the most vulnerable population, to access the labor market, for example, through the employability actions carried out from the Development area Local and the fiscal measures and economic aid that are being promoted from the Treasury and other departments of the Corporation”.
For his part, the Councilor for Local Development, José Juan Gavilán, assessed the employment data of the municipality for the month of June, a period in which unemployment fell by 318 people (2.1% compared to the previous month) and is cut by 4,641 people compared to the same period a year ago, maintaining the improvement trend of recent months and returning to data from almost 13 and a half years ago, with a total of 15,106 people unemployed in a municipality with a total population of about 160,000 people.
“The monthly figures continue to be very positive and we have spent several months with a continued decline in unemployment and a rise in Social Security affiliations, as well as indefinite contracts. If we continue on this path, we hope to soon lower the barrier of 15,000 people and that the significant increase in permanent contracts, which accounts for almost 50% of the new contracts this month, will allow us to continue improving the working conditions of the Laguneros and lagoons”, affirmed the mayor.
However, despite the very positive impact that the labor reform is having, the councilor pointed out that “it is time to be prudent and continue reinforcing local policies to promote economic development and improve employability, since the economic, health and current geopolitics maintain too many uncertainties”.
All the unemployment indicators made public yesterday registered significant decreases, both by gender and by age groups. Thus, unemployment fell by 3.3% monthly and 27.3% year-on-year in the case of men and 1.1% monthly and 20.3%, respectively, in that of women, who continue to be the group majority of unemployed people and represent 56.16% of the total.
In turn, significant decreases are observed in the different age groups, especially in the case of youth unemployment, with a reduction, compared to May, of 4.6% in the group under 25 years of age, followed by 3 .2% of the group between 25 and 44 years old and 1.1% in the group over 45 years old.
The number of registrations picks up again and exceeds 2,900 contracts, which represents an increase of 11.4% compared to May and a year-on-year rise of 19.91%. The majority, 56.84%, have been registered in the age group between 25 and 44 years and, by educational level, 51.59% correspond to the group of people with secondary education.
