The Municipality of Puerto de la Cruz announces the recent execution of conditioning works and superficial improvement of the Martianez beachwhich have made it possible to “improve their safety and use conditions, as well as minimize the risks derived from the accumulation of sand and stones in certain areas” of this cove located next to the popular Lago Martianez.
The delegate councilor for Beaches in the Porto Town Hall, Albert Cape (Asamblea Ciudadana Portuense), affirms that «the strong waves caused by successive storms had caused that in the middle and upper part of the Martiánez beach, especially in the area located just in front of the restaurant-cafeteria La Coronelaa large amount of sand and pebbles were piled up, which was a risk, since both the promenade and the premises located there could be damaged from the moment in which new episodes of bad weather occurred ».
Through the work carried out in various areas of Martiánez, contracted by the Department of Beaches to a specialized company, «the stairs have been cleared of sand located in front of the restaurant, the surface has been leveled throughout that area, the sand that had accumulated in the upper part has been extended towards the middle part of the beach, they have been moved to the surroundings of the breakwater in the eastern area the callaos concentrated in the upper part and the stones of the central part have been moved towards the sector closest to the mouth of the ravine».
Costas announced in 2006 a millionaire integral improvement that continues without materializing 14 years later
Albert Cape considers that the actions carried out “will allow the users of the Martiánez beach to enjoy this bathing area this summer in better conditions, while reducing the danger of the waves pushing the stones and sand towards the premises and the promenade itself, which could cause damage.
This punctual improvement of Martianez beach It allows improving the aesthetic conditions and use of this cove of black sand and stones, which since 2006 has been waiting for a comprehensive action that Costas, a body dependent on the Government of Spain, still has not specified 16 years later.
The long-awaited work to improve Martiánez beach, in Cross port, suffered a new setback two years ago. As reported in July 2020 by the People’s Party, the environmental impact statement for the project had expired, which meant starting a good part of the administrative process all over again, which “since 2018 was only pending the signing of an agreement between the State, the City Council and the Cabildo.” The mayor of Porto Marco Gonzalez (PSOE)lamented then the criticism of “those who let this project sleep for almost a decade, both in Madrid and in the Cabildo, and who now come out to tell us that it took us five months to sign a collaboration agreement that they never signed in eight years of government ».
In 2006, the General Directorate of Coasts announced that it would invest 5 million euros in a new reform of the Martiánez coastline and beach, where some unfortunate interventions have been carried out in recent decades. After a tortuous process, the environmental impact statement was approved in 2011 and its budget at that time amounted to about 8 million euros.
