The Government Council of the Cabildo approved this week to provide an economic allocation of 125,000 euros to the Temporary Protection Program in Tenerife for human rights defenders, proposed by Sí Podemos Canarias. The counselor of the purple formation David Carballo, values: «This initiative makes the Cabildo a pioneering institution in the Canary Islands by having this figure».
Carballo stresses that management can be opted for through competitive competition for the call for grants for the protection of people with this profile who are in a situation of danger in their country of origin due to their activism.
Carballo recalls that the measure “arises from an amendment that our group presented to the Island Budget for this year” with the idea of materializing a motion presented in September 2021 approved institutionally,
The island councilor explains that the economic endowment will allow “covering the transfer and maintenance of human rights defenders, as well as the execution of projects that contain information activities, awareness and denunciation of their possible violation.”
The program will offer special attention to projects related to the defense of the rights of women and girls; of the LGTBIQ+ collective; environmental and climate issues, climate action and sustainable development; the fight against the occupation of territories; trade unions or the right to information, among others.
