As expected, the Plenary session of the City Council of Candelaria yesterday approved the specifications of the service of waste collection and street cleaning and the coast of the municipality of Candelaria, while the sanitation of public buildings will be entrusted to the public company Epelcan. It is expected that the contest can be called before the end of the year.

As we announced yesterday, the new specifications seek to provide the municipality with a service adapted to the current population (almost 30,000 inhabitants) of Candelaria, which will have an annual budget of 3,111,823.33 euros, and in seven years, which is the duration of the contract, the total amount will be 21,782,763.33 euros. This new contract will mean a leap in quality in the collection of waste and in the cleaning of the municipality, incorporating the latest technology in machinery and promoting the separation and recycling of waste. “Candelaria will make a 180-degree turn in garbage collection,” said the Councilor for the Treasury and Concession Companies, Airam Pérez Chinea, who admitted the delay (more than 11 years of extended service) in launching this new contest, which, in addition , will replace the current 53 Urbaser workers, calculating a minimum staff of 56 people.

The collection of the organic fraction, the fifth container, is incorporated into the service, and there is a commitment to promoting self-composting through specific awareness plans, undertaking the management of the collection of light packaging, paper and cardboard, used textiles, cooking oils, domestic use, batteries, electrical appliances, household goods and vehicles out of use. Likewise, a mobile ecopoint will be added that will rotate through the municipality to facilitate the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment in order to facilitate the separation and recycling of neighbors.

The new contract will involve the total renovation of the existing machinery equipped with the latest technology in terms of waste collection and street cleaning in order to provide an energy and environmentally sustainable service. In addition, the new concessionaire will propose the collection system that will entail the renewal of a large part of the containers, which will have an electronic system to detect their fill level, which will allow more efficient collection routes to be established.

The statement had the favorable votes of the PSOE, CC and Neighbors for Candelaria (12); the votes against Yes You Can (2), and the abstentions of the PP (2). The Councilor for Citizens did not attend, as is usual.

Approval of the purification agreement, while Güímar doubts

There were two issues related to the treatment of wastewater dealt with in plenary and both had the favorable votes of the entire plenary, with the exception of the two councilors from Sí se puede, something that the mayor, Mari Brito, blamed them for. : “It is disheartening that we are fixing a problem from 40 years ago and you vote against it, lacking the truth”.

The first point approved was the agreement between the Insular Water Council and the municipalities of Arafo, Candelaria and Güímar, although this maintains doubts about the economic plan, for the management of the urban and industrial wastewater treatment infrastructures of the Polígono Industrial del Valle de Güímar, while in the second a new modification of the deadlines of the plan of stages of the file related to the outfall of the Polígono was addressed, a plan that must conclude in February 2023 with the transfer to Ciatf, when it is now entrusted by the has Arafo.
