SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 30. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, described this Thursday as “good news” that NATO has approved increasing security on the southern flank of the alliance because it will mean “greater security” for the inhabitants of the islands.

Speaking to journalists after meeting with the president of CEOE-Tenerife, Pedro Alfonso, Torres indicated that it would be “foolish” to think that the geopolitical situation is the same as before the invasion of Ukraine given that “new blocks ” and that has “implications” in Africa.

Torres has also valued that NATO understands that immigration is seen “as an attack when it is provoked by the countries”, recalling that in just one weekend there were more than 2,600 arrivals in the Canary Islands.

The president believes that these measures “help the security of the canaries” given that the islands are part of the southern flank that goes from West Africa to the Middle East and cites as an example the recent events in Melilla where many migrants died.

Along these lines, he pointed out that the migratory routes “have their paths”, and “sometimes” intensify through the Strait of Gibraltar and at other times through the Canary Islands, which represents the “most dangerous”.
