The Canarian Coalition (CC) group in the La Orotava City Council yesterday presented a motion to the Plenary to urge the Government of the Canary Islands to withdraw the progress document from the Master Plan for Use and Management (PRUG) of the Teide National Parkin order to open a broad debate with the public in order to guarantee consensus on such an important issue for Tenerife.
The proposal, defended by the spokesman for the nationalists, Narciso Pérez, was only supported by the Popular Party (PP) councilor, given that the rest of the opposition, PSOE and the Assembly for La Orotava, voted against it and described it as “ political opportunism.
The spokespersons of these last two groups, Víctor Luis and Aida Salazar, respectively, recalled that it is a document that has been worked on since 2018 in the Council of Tenerife“and under a CC mandate”, and starting from scratch would mean delaying the entire process.
In the opinion of both, the only alternative contemplated by the Canarian Coalition “is to dilate it in time and postpone it for the next legislature and that does not seem serious, because we are in the process of citizen participation.”
Both agreed that “the political use of such a sensitive proposal for the Island is not worth it,” so they proposed that it be dealt with in the corresponding commission and a document be drawn up that represents the entire Corporation, but CC did not accept it.
The debate on the PRUG lasted more than 40 minutes, in which the mayor, Francisco Linares, decided to speak, as contemplated in the Regulations of the City Council. He stressed that La Orotava “deserves another treatment” by having 70% of the National Park in its territory and emphasized three issues that affect the Villa and that the document does not include.
One is security, “which from two in the afternoon until eight in the morning is run by the Local Police”, because at that time “he is left alone”, which is why he asked that the Civil Guard barracks return to have permanent headquarters there. He also requested that an annex be made to the solid waste collection plan, a service that the Consistory pays for “with the neighbors’ money” and that, in his opinion, the Cabildo should pay for; and finally, a public shelter.
