“This constitutes an administrative infraction classified as very serious,” according to sources from the insular corporation.

The Cabildo will transfer the resolution to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, for the purpose of initiating the corresponding procedure, which must rule on the maintenance, or not, of the precautionary measure of suspension of the works in the area.

The complaint filed by the Tegüico Heritage Association before the insular corporation motivated the realization of an inspection in the area where the works are carried out, which took place on May 24, the day after receiving, via WhatsApp, said complaint.

After this inspection and within the review process of the project documentation that the Cabildo was already carrying out, it was found that the patrimonial study was not available, a document that the promoting entity had presented to the Government of the Canary Islands, although not to the corporation.

Therefore, on May 31, a resolution was issued precautionary suspension of works up to the archaeological study, which has already been presented to the insular corporation, where the heritage elements of the scope of action of the works have been analyzed, as well as the corrective measures proposed.

On June 1, the agents of the Historical Heritage Administrative Service carried out a new inspection visit, accompanied by technicians from the Adeje City Council, the archaeologist hired by the promoter and its personnel.

After this visit and after analyzing the technical documentation, it is concluded, among other issues, that it is essential to carry out an archaeological monitoring task by a technical specialist in Archaeology, who must supervise and execute all the protection measures planned.

The resolution issued this Tuesday, June 28, will be notified to the promoting entity, the Adeje City Council and the Department of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, in addition to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The complaint of the Teguico Heritage Association It has not been the only one presented against the project. Another has also been formally presented against carrying out the works during the weekend, when the municipal ordinances prohibit it, and another for the continuation of the works despite the precautionary stoppage.

A macro project surrounded by protected areas

This macro-tourism project aims to develop a ravine and a beach in the south of the island together with two protected areas, one land and one sea, and plans to develop some 430,000 square meters with more than 400 luxury villas, hotels, restaurants, swimming pools , beach clubs, spa, and other infrastructure such as a garden whose extension (20,000 square meters) invades part of the Adeje Protected Nature Reserve Site of Scientific Interest, according to the project plans published by the promoters. These are two Belgian investment families (Vandermarliere and Van Biervliet) with “a strong portfolio of real estate projects, both in Belgium and internationally”, the group highlighted the day the start of the works was staged (although the works had already running time).

The two protected areas are the Caleta de Adeje Site of Scientific Interest, and the Teno-Rasca Special Conservation Zone marine strip, both rich in unique flora and fauna and with endangered or very fragile species.

Protests against a mass tourism model

As soon as the official start of the works was known, a protest began against this project in particular, but also against a development model based on mass tourism that preys on the territory. The fuse caught on social networks but later moved to the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where several thousands of people shouted last June 11 their rejection of these initiatives, they defended a tourist moratorium and criticized the collapse that the island is experiencing and its destruction, especially that of its biodiversity.
