Canarians were the least traveled residents in Spain in the first quarter of the year with 387 trips per 1,000 inhabitants, ahead of Murcia (454) and Castilla-La Mancha (574), according to data from the Resident Tourism Survey ( ETR/FAMILITUR) published this Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
In total there were 825,333 travellers, 2.6% of the total, with an average duration of four overnight stays, and despite being the fewest travellers, they are the ones who spend the most, with 88 euros per day.
In addition, the archipelago was ranked as the eleventh destination community with a total of 854,817 trips, 2.7% of the total, with a rate of 401 trips per 100,000 inhabitants and an average of 3.9 overnight stays.
The islands led the average daily spending with 96 euros, followed by the Basque Country (93 euros) and the Community of Madrid (86). On the opposite side were the Valencian Community (48 euros), La Rioja (49) and Castilla y León and Extremadura (50).
At the national level, residents made a total of 32.1 million trips in the first quarter of the year, which is double the figure registered in the same period of 2021, which shows that total spending has tripled, exceeding 7,045 million euros. .
92.8% of the trips had the national territory as their main destination, with an increase of 101.9% compared to the first quarter of last year. On the other hand, trips abroad, which represent 7.2% of the total, increased by 394.8%.
The main reason for the trips made in the first quarter were leisure, recreation and vacation trips (41.1%), which grew by 228.2%. On the other hand, visits to family or friends, which represent 40% of the total, increased by 83.8%. Business trips and other professional reasons and for other reasons, increased by 32.9% and 65.8%, respectively.
In internal trips during the first quarter, the main reasons were visits to family or friends (40.8% of the total) and leisure (40%) and in trips to foreign destinations, the main reason was leisure, recreation and vacations, with 55.6% of the total.
In 44.7% of the trips to domestic destinations, the residents stayed in the homes of relatives or friends. More than 13.3 million trips used this type of accommodation, with an annual increase of 80.2%.
In trips abroad, hotel accommodation was the preferred option (52.3% of trips). This type of accommodation registered a rise of 545.1% compared to the first quarter of 2021.
Regarding the main type of transport used, the own vehicle accounted for 80.9% of trips to domestic destinations, 91.3% more than in the same quarter of 2021. In 61.9% of trips abroad air transport was used, with an increase of 560.7%.
ANDALUSIA, CATALONIA AND VALENCIA, MAIN DESTINATIONS.
The main autonomous communities of destination were Andalusia (16.4% of the total), Catalonia (14.4%) and the Valencian Community (10.4%). If internal trips by residents are related to the destination population, the travel phenomenon is more intense in Castilla y León (with 1,293 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Aragón (1,148) and Extremadura (1,062).
Trips made by residents of the Community of Madrid accounted for 18.2% of the total in the first quarter. Behind are Catalonia (17.6%) and Andalusia (15.4%)
INE data show that the most traveled Spaniards were residents of the Community of Madrid (876 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Aragón (859) and La Rioja (832).
SPENDING TRIPLES
INE data shows that total travel spending in the first quarter of the year stood at 7,045 million euros, which is more than triple the figure of 2,260 million euros recorded in the first quarter of 2021.
In trips to national destinations, total spending rose by 170.8%, while those made abroad grew by 437%. The average daily expenditure stood at 62 euros for trips to domestic destinations and 101 euros for trips abroad.
In domestic travel, spending on bars and restaurants, which represents the largest percentage of total spending (25.3%), increased by 238.4% compared to the first quarter of 2021. In foreign travel, spending on transportation it accounted for 35.9% of the total, with an annual increase of 400.9%.
By autonomous community of main destination, the highest average daily expenses were recorded for trips to the Canary Islands (96 euros), the Basque Country (93 euros), and the Community of Madrid (86). For its part, the lowest values were in the Valencian Community (48 euros), La Rioja (49), and Castilla y León and Extremadura (50).
By autonomous community of origin, the highest average daily expenditure is made by residents of the Canary Islands (88 euros), the Basque Country (80) and the Region of Murcia (79). On the contrary, the lowest were in La Rioja (57 euros), the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands (61 in both regions).
ALMOST 11 MILLION MONTHLY TRIPS
The monthly data from the INE show how a total of 10.6 million trips were made in January, 10.9 million in February and 10.7 million in March. The trips made in January had an average duration of 3.9 overnight stays, higher than those of February and March, of 2.6 and 3.1 nights, respectively.
January was the month with the lowest percentage of trips within the autonomous community of residence (51.4%, compared to 54.5% in February). This is due to the higher percentage of trips to another community (41.7% of the total).
Leisure was the main reason for traveling in the months of February and March, (with 42.2% and 43.3% of the total, respectively), and visits to family or friends in January (45.7%) . Travel for professional reasons reached its maximum in February and March (12.5% of the total).
January was the month with the greatest role for non-market accommodation (69.9%). Hotel accommodation registered its greatest weight in March (27.6%) and the rest of market accommodation in February (12.9%).
Data from the statistical institute also show that the resident population aged 15 or over made 51.5 million excursions in the first quarter, with an annual increase of 41.4%. 96.3% of the excursions were for personal reasons and 3.7% for professional reasons.
89.4% of the excursions were made within the autonomous community of residence, with an annual increase of 30%. 9.6% of the excursions were destined for another community and 1% abroad. The number of excursions rose by 396.3% in the first.
