Sí Podemos Canarias denounces the “unjustified” felling of two trees on a road in Tenerife

It is not the first time that Sí Podemos Canarias in the Cabildo de Tenerife denounces these facts. At the beginning of March, the party presented a contentious-administrative appeal before the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) to request the precautionary stoppage of the resurfacing work on the TF-21 road (La Orotava), since the corporation foresees the felling “unjustified” trees. The group has affirmed in a statement that the Roads area of ​​the Tenerife Cabildo contemplates the felling of 11 trees “in an unjustified and indiscriminate manner” and intends to eliminate some specimens that have been on the margins of the TF-21 for more than 40 years.

After confirming the Corporation’s Highways area its plans to carry out the felling in the section located between the kilometer point 0.0 and 4.7, Sí Podemos Canarias has resorted to legal proceedings to try to “paralyze the crazy arboricide that the Cabildo intends to commit with this work, since we must prevent this institution from continuing to remove trees from the margins of our roads, which it has been doing for a long time in other similar actions, “he said in the note. In this sense, the insular group has recalled that last year “an unjustified felling already took place on the TF-652, in the municipality of Arona, where the Laureles de Indias, which formed a shadow tunnel at the foot, were felled from the base Of the road”.

For Sí Podemos Canarias, the decision adopted by the Cabildo “has no basis to justify this new environmental attack, since alternative solutions have been proposed that prevent the elimination of these specimens, such as reducing speed on that stretch of road , the installation of soundtracks, or other modifications in terms of signage that guarantee road safety for both pedestrians and people who travel with their vehicles.

For its part, it has defended that the Cabildo “must carry out its interventions respecting these plant elements, beyond this specific case that concerns us in La Orotava, since they constitute a unique and irreplaceable tree heritage that is part of the environmental and cultural heritage of our land, which implies that its protection and conservation is of public interest”.

The political group, in addition, has highlighted that last October, at the proposal of Sí Podemos Canarias, “an institutional motion was approved in the Plenary Commission by which the corporation agreed to convene an Insular Table for Tree Protection, with the purpose of ensuring the adequate maintenance of the trees that are located in the routes of insular competition, to avoid their deterioration, disease or any circumstance that could lead to indiscriminate felling or pruning. However, it has denounced that “to this day, the insular government still does not want to comply with this agreement to launch the aforementioned consultative body, in which all the political groups of the Cabildo, of the affected municipalities, as well as as with neighborhood associations, environmentalists or any of those who watch over our ecosystem.
