SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 20. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The CEO of Foreign Action of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Liskel Álvarez, has attended the second day of presentation of the MAC projects with Cape Verde, organized by the General Directorate of Economic Relations with Africa, to facilitate the creation of new project opportunities shared between the organizations that already participate in an Interreg-Mac project, including the promotion of volcanic tourism and cooperation in Macaronesia.
The meeting, held in the Cape Verdean capital, was attended by representatives of around thirty projects from the second call for this European programme, led by Canarian organisations.
In its development, the ‘Volturmac’ and ‘Volrikmac II’ projects were announced, in which the Cabildo de Tenerife participates, through the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan) and the Technological and Renewable Energy Institute (ITER), among other partners, and whose objective is to enhance the volcanic resources in the Macaronesian region.
Liskel Álvarez points out in a note that “through these projects, we want to promote, on the one hand, tourist activity linked to the volcanic phenomenon, in a way that is respectful and sustainable with the natural environment, and, on the other hand, strengthen the resources and cooperation between the Macaronesian regions in the face of possible volcanic emergencies”.
For his part, the island councilor for Innovation, Enrique Arriaga, indicates that “both Involcan and ITER are, once again, at the service of citizens and both organizations do a commendable job in the volcanological study.”
For this reason, he indicates that “it is essential to share studies that allow us to work in a coordinated manner.”
The ‘Volturmac’ project has a budget of 1,964,660 euros and aims to promote volcanic tourism in the Macaronesian area, through the creation of itineraries and tourist routes that revalue the natural and cultural resources of the volcanoes.
For its part, the ‘Volriskmac II’ project, with a budget of 1,609,594 euros, promotes the prevention and management of risks in the face of future volcanic emergencies.
Both projects are financed through the Interreg MAC territorial cooperation program of the second call 2014-2020.
Its content was explained by two of the researchers in charge of its execution, Javier Dóniz, head of the Involcan Geotourism Functional Unit, and Pedro Hernández, researcher from the Involcan Volcanic Surveillance area.
Among its benefits, it seeks to strengthen the early volcanic warning system through the improvement of instrumental networks, monitoring systems and the implementation of innovative methodologies.
To this end, collaboration between the MAC regions and the participating partners and national and international R&D institutions with a recognized track record is promoted to strengthen the scientific response to volcanic emergencies.
