La Victoria de Acentejo takes another step towards sustainable mobility with the future construction, in the heart of the city, of a public dissuasive car park that will decongest traffic in the area, while promoting the use of bicycles, scooters and electric cars.
“The infrastructure will be a real incentive for the downtown area of La Victoria de Acentejo, since it will facilitate the social, cultural and commercial life of our neighbors and those who visit us,” says the mayor, Juan Antonio García. “Its strategic location next to the Town Hall and the square, near the future auditorium and in the middle of the commercial area, will mark a before and after in the sustainable mobility of the municipality. East parking underground will become a kind of small-scale interchange, in which the user will leave their vehicle to continue their journey on foot or through other options that do not consume fossil energy, such as bicycles or electric scooters, which will be at their disposal at this location.”
For the execution of the project, there is already a subsidy of 1,157,961 euros from the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda, within its line of aid for local projects that favor the transition to a low-carbon economy and within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for sustainable growth (2014-2020). In addition, the City Council of La Victoria de Acentejo will make a contribution of 234,905 euros.
The building, which will have 90 parking spaces, will be built on Calle Pérez Díaz, on a plot of 806 square meters attached to the Town Hall, since the new infrastructure is also intended to improve accessibility to the Town Hall, which Today it has shortcomings in this regard. The property will consist of four floors, two underground and two above ground.
Likewise, a photovoltaic installation will be located on the roof of the building that will allow both its energy self-sufficiency and that of the three electric car recharging points that will be located inside. Finally, the infrastructure will be completed with the placement of 10 recharging anchors for bicycles and the same number for electric scooters. Depending on its feasibility, the implementation of a public bicycle rental system is also contemplated.
All these measures are part of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) of La Victoria de Acentejo, which was approved two years ago. The mayor, Juan Antonio García, explains that “the plan reflects that our municipality has a motorization rate of 920 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, which almost doubles the national average of 499 cars.” “On the other hand -he adds-, Pérez Díaz street is one of the busiest roads in the town, with an average daily intensity of 3,397 vehicles. This is due to the commercial activity and the large number of facilities, equipment and services that are developed in the area”. “This large influx of vehicles, coupled with the lack of parking, means that drivers have to go around several times before they can park, which further increases CO2 emissions.”
