SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 14. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife, in collaboration with the Fasnia City Council, will hold various activities next weekend to publicize and promote the consumption of one of the island’s traditional local potato varieties, the papa palma.

The island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, and the mayor of Fasnia, Luis Javier González, presented this Tuesday the Papea Fasnia program of activities, which includes guided tours, talks, workshops, tastings and a sample of local products with 16 stands on June 18 and 19. The insular director of Agriculture and Rural Development Cayetano Silva also participated in the act.

Javier Parrilla explained that this initiative is part of the strategy to promote the Tenerife potato that began this June. “We are facing an act to discover a treasure that was being lost and to protect our landscape and our traditions. The Fasnia palm potato is a different type of potato, which can produce two harvests a year and has always been highly appreciated and valued by the producers and consumers,” added the island councilor.

During his speech, Luis Javier González assured that this event represents “two very important milestones for the municipality”, because on the one hand “it will allow the recovery and value of the palm potato cultivation tradition, which runs the risk of disappearing”, and on the other “invites to consume, invest and to move the economy of the municipality”.

The insular director of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Cayetano Silva, outlined the program of activities and explained that on Saturday June 18 there will be two guided tours of the municipality. They will have limited capacity, so it will be necessary to register in advance on the Agrocabildo website.

On Sunday the 19th, in the tent at Plaza Francisco Delgada y Díaz Flores, a sample of potatoes and products from the agricultural sector will be organized, in which you can buy and taste, in addition to potatoes from palm trees, numerous local products, such as cheeses (soft , smoked and semi-cured), wines, exotic fruits (pitaya and passion fruit), tropical fruits (pineapple, papaya and strawberries), extra virgin olive oil, certified organic products, Abona honeys and Fasnia figs with their different preparations (jams, vinegar creams liqueurs or chocolates).

The fair, open to the general public from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., also includes a palm potato tasting workshop with farmers and restaurateurs, a talk about the palm potato and a culinary demonstration to publicize the richness of this product and its many possibilities. culinary. To participate in the showcooking, which will be carried out by Diego Schattenhofer, Chef of the Hotel Villa Cortés, it will also be necessary to register on the Agrocabildo website.
