Puerto de la Cruz, the only municipality in the Canary Islands that is a candidate for the International Culture 21 Award



The Cultural and Creative Ecosystem of Puerto de la Cruz is one of the 80 candidate projects for the fifth edition of the UCLG – Mexico City – Culture 21 International Award, aimed at recognizing and giving visibility to those cities and personalities from around the world that have outstanding for its contribution to culture as a key dimension in the sustainable development of societies.

Puerto de la Cruz is the only municipality in the Canary Islands that is eligible for the International Culture 21 Award corresponding to the 2021-22 period, specifically, in the category of Cities or Local or Regional Governments. The objective of this edition is to highlight metropolises and personalities who have distinguished themselves by promoting cultural rights in the context of both the COVID-19 crisis and the post-pandemic recovery, or have promoted culture as an important part of the care.

“This candidacy represents a new support for the Cultural and Creative Ecosystem of Puerto de la Cruz, a municipality that has stood out throughout the pandemic for its commitment to a contemporary, participatory model of cultural policies that values ​​our identity and symbolism and is capable of to support the artistic and creative fabric while integrating the citizenry and involving the visitor”, says the mayor and head of Culture Marco González. It will be within the framework of the UCLG Executive Bureau, which is being held from today until June 16 in Seville, when the winners of this edition of the award will be announced, the delivery of which will take place at the end of September in Mexico, coinciding with the celebration of Mondiacult 2022.

Puerto de la Cruz is nominated for the UCLG – Mexico City – Culture International Award for contributing to the social and economic development of citizens with a contemporary vision of how to create culture in a collaborative and sustainable manner. The municipality, which has become a regional benchmark in the last 20 years for its public management of culture, advances in these policies by designing a more flexible, resilient strategic model, adapted to current social events and in accordance with the theses outlined in the SDGs and the New European Bauhaus: the Cultural and Creative Ecosystem, led in its development and execution by Mayor Marco González.
