The Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands has put out to tender the tender for the drafting of the construction project called Third Lane TF-1, Güímar-San Isidro, in Tenerife, an action that aims to extend to three lanes by felt the capacity of the southern highway in a section of 34 kilometers. With this competition, to which the Ministry allocates 1,955,632 euros, a definitive boost is given to projects that seek to expand the capacity of the TF-1 to improve the safety and circulation of the motorway in the south of Tenerife from Playa de Las Americas until the entrance to the capital of the island since in recent weeks the Government has put out to tender the projects for two other sections of the third rail and the Las Chafiras-Oroteanda section is under construction.
With these planned actions, the TF-1 would be equipped with a third lane practically in its entirety, including the section from Güímar to San Isidro. This section is currently congested at the beginning and end of the working day, since nearly 50,000 vehicles use it daily, including many heavy vehicles, which makes traffic heavy from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 9:00 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., southbound and northbound, respectively. Additionally, this high-capacity road acts as communication between the Güímar industrial estate, the largest in Tenerife in terms of occupied area, with the Port of Granadilla of general interest to the State, an estate for which there is a very significant growth forecast, therefore, it is foreseeable that the traffic intensity of this section of the TF-1 will increase considerably.
The current TF-1, in the Güímar-San Isidro section, was built in the 1970s and the carriageway was doubled at the end of the 1980s. Later, in 2009, work on the third lane of the TF-1 from Santa Cruz to Güímar, for which it is necessary to continue expanding the capacity of the road on its way to the south, as established in the Insular Planning Plan for Tenerife, which sets out as a generic objective the progressive adaptation of the infrastructural support to the needs of the island.
The layout and construction project that is being tendered now must define an action that extends over a route of 34 kilometers and affects 13 junctions, 12 bridges, 11 underpasses and the double tunnel located in Güímar.
This tender joins that of two other projects that have already been put out to tender by the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing this year to continue with the expansion of the TF-1 towards Adeje. The first of these projects went out to tender on May 20 and corresponds to the Las Américas-Fañabé section, which will be carried out through a cut-and-cover tunnel and includes the expansion of the TF-1 to three lanes. At the end of the same month, the drafting of the project for the third rail on the San Isidro-Las Américas route, Oroteanda-Las Américas subsection, was also tendered. In addition, also within the San Isidro-Las Américas route, the Ministry is currently executing the Las Chafiras and Oroteanda junctions, which include the conditioning of the TF-1 carriageway between both junctions to accommodate the third lane in the future.
