The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has thanked the Minister of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Democratic Memory, Félix Bolaños, on his official Twitter account, for having presented Pope Francis with bananas from La Palma.
“Pope Francis will be able to taste a magnificent fruit such as the banana from the Canary Islands, born in the fertile lands of La Palma. A gesture towards the island that has suffered the most devastating volcano, in terms of material damage, in Europe,” said Torres.
Félix Bolaños was received today, Monday, in a private audience by Pope Francis at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. In the meeting, which lasted 50 minutes, both exchanged opinions and lines of work on different issues of common interest between the Government and the Catholic Church.
The minister has presented the pontiff with a reproduction of the Cantigas de Santa María de Alfonso X, made by students of the National Heritage Artistic Bookbinding Workshop School, created for the labor insertion of young unemployed people. I have also given him saffron from Villafranca de los Caballeros (La Mancha Designation of Origin); olive oil from two cooperatives in Jaén, and bananas grown on the island of La Palma.
The minister explained to Pope Francis the exemplary behavior and solidarity of the people of La Palma during the eruption of the volcano.
