The agreement between Council of Tenerife and the state trading company Aguas de las Cuencas de España (Acuaes) have 80% of their budget in execution, having been awarded 140 million euros in four of the five major works that make up the agreement: Arona Este-San Miguel, West, Granadilla de Abona and Valle de La Orotava. The Acentejo treatment plant remains to be awarded.
During yesterday’s visit to the Los Letrados (Granadilla de Abona) and Las Charquetas (Guía de Isora) treatment plants by the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, and the general director of Acuaes, Rosa Cobo, Martín referred to that the investments contemplated in the agreement “will represent an undoubted improvement in water treatment on the Island and will place Tenerife at levels of wastewater treatment of close to 90%”. He stressed that with this the Island “will take a qualitative and quantitative leap to avoid the sanctions received by the Government of Spain for the inappropriate treatment of wastewater, in the case of Tenerife.”
As for Granadilla, he said that this treatment plant “will allow treating about 14,000 cubic meters, with the intention that these purified waters be reused for agriculture.” He also spoke of other sanitation and purification projects that are being carried out in other places on the island, such as in the Güímar Valley or in Arona-Adeje. “In these four years we will completely change an obsolete and harmful wastewater management model for the Island” with a commitment to “an important investment” to “solve the discharge problems that have threatened Tenerife for more than 40 years”, he claimed.
The monitoring committee for the agreement between the Cabildo and Acuaes met at the Tenerife Water Council to review the status of the sanitation and purification actions carried out thanks to an investment of 170 million euros, of which the Corporation insular contributes half, 85 million.
During the visit to Los Letrados, the mayor of Granadilla, José Domingo Regalado, pointed out that the construction of the sewage treatment plant in the municipality «is the priority work for the municipal government. What is necessary now is that the established deadlines are met and that we have this infrastructure as soon as possible, which is a vital action in environmental matters that the municipality demands. When it comes into operation it will be a great day for Granadilla de Abona”, emphasized the councilor.
Josefa Mesa pointed out that the West treatment plant project is “one of the most important that not only Guia de Isora has, but also the Island.” The mayor stressed that “its implementation will close the cycle of wastewater use directing the resulting product to our farmers.”
Emilio Navarro, mayor of Santiago del Teide, stressed that the progress of these works “is of vital importance to prevent discharges into the sea and solve environmental problems in this area. Simply, congratulate us all for this work that is being carried out and that this region continues to advance as we wish.
