SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 8. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The plenary session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands approved this Wednesday, by assent of the seven groups in the Chamber, the creation of a study commission on the demographic challenge and population balance in the Canary Islands.
The groups will thus address the problems of the three green islands –La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro– which are progressively losing population or stagnating in the face of the increase in the two capital islands, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
The Canary Islands had a little over 300,000 inhabitants in 1900 and today it has more than 2.2 million and in the two easternmost islands, in the last 25 years, the population has increased by 180% and 102%, respectively.
In the same plenary session, the creation of another study commission on sport and physical activity in the Canary Islands was also approved by assent.
