SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 8. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The spokeswoman for the Joint Group, Vidina Espino, rejected this Wednesday the decision of the Parliamentary Bureau to spend 1,238 euros on the purchase of each of the 85 armchairs to renovate the plenary hall.

The deputy has described this expense as “absolutely superfluous and totally expendable”, taking into account that, in the Canary Islands, 630,000 people are in a situation of social exclusion and half of them, in severe poverty, that is to say that they do not receive any type of income, according to data from the Foessa Canarias Report 2022.

Espino has urgently requested that this matter be included among the topics to be discussed at the Board of Spokespersons to be held this coming Monday “so that the governing body of the Chamber reviews the signed contract and looks for other alternatives”, such as the repair of those armchairs that are worn out by use.

“It is essential to redirect the situation that has been generated,” said the spokeswoman, who lamented “the social alarm and unease created, rightly so, among citizens” with a decision that “damages the image of the deputies of the Chamber itself” .

The agreement of the Table justifies the decision of this purchase of armchairs in which the hemicycle, as the central room in which parliamentary activity takes place, constitutes the reference image of the Chamber and hence the adequate conservation of the armchairs that are part of the furniture, which highlights the need for them to meet adequate comfort and health conditions for prolonged use.

The spokeswoman wanted to make it clear that “as a deputy and user of Parliament’s facilities”, she finds no reason why her health is affected by sitting in armchairs that she does not consider to be obsolete.

“1,238 euros per chair, more than 100,000 euros in total, is a useless and superfluous expense”, insisted Espino, who finds “no justification that proves the efficiency and suitability of this contract, much less than the hemicycle and the parliamentarians need new chairs so that the Chamber can fulfill and carry out its institutional purposes”.
