SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 7. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has disfigured this Tuesday the president of the Andalusian Government, Juan Manuel Moreno, who has criticized the deployment of the Comprehensive Employment Plan (PIEC) in the Canary Islands.
“One community can be defended without attacking another”, he commented, lamenting that previous PP governments withdrew the program and that the Andalusian president does not understand that the islands are the Outermost Region and have specific needs.
He stressed that the PIEC “is not capricious” but rather a tool “of mandatory compliance” for the central government and that it is included in the Statute of Autonomy and in the REF, for an amount of 42 million and that the Canary Islands aspire “to increase”.
The president has assessed that the plan is aimed at people who “have been unemployed for a long time” so that they have “training and remuneration”, and in many cases, it is the only salary that enters a family unit.
He has indicated that his Government “defends and executes” the plan — “Canary Islands is one of the best” — and has recalled that some political formations “said that it was useless” when it includes items for the self-employed and specialized groups.
Regarding the unemployment data in May, he pointed out that they are “very favorable” given that it is a “difficult” month, but a drop of almost 6,000 unemployed has been achieved and a “record” of registrations in Social Security, to which is added that 50% of the contracts are indefinite.
In addition, he has said that the “apocalyptic messages” that questioned the rise in the SMI and the labor reform “have been left in evidence” because “when there are more resources, people consume more and society improves.”
Torres sees the future with “moderate optimism” despite the fact that the Canary Islands are not an “oasis” and are also affected by “high inflation” but “the engine” of tourism maintains good prospects for summer and winter, so although come “curves”, the islands are “more prepared”.
Luis Campos, spokesperson for NC, pointed out that despite the positive employment data, the Canary Islands continue to suffer from high levels of unemployment, mainly among women, young people and the long-term unemployed, and therefore considered that programs such as the PIEC are essential .
He has said that his party “was decisive in recovering it” because the PP governments abandoned the archipelago “when it was most needed” and it recovered in 2017 and 2018 thanks to amendments made by its formation.
Nira Fierro, president of the Socialist Group, has highlighted that the unemployment data for May are “good” and show that society is advancing “fairly” and with the ERTE and the labor reform “working”.
“There is still a long way to go but we will do it based on social justice and dignifying the labor market”, he commented, also stressing that “when things go well, the Government will have some blame”.
