Marta González Pérez is 23 years old, she studies Interpretation in Madrid and combines it with jobs in fashion, advertising or sporadic fairs. It is the first time that she has presented herself as a candidate for Carnival Queen, although this young palm tree, a native of Los Llanos de Aridane, already has an important crown: in 2019 she was elected Second Maid of Honor at Miss World Spain.
-What expectations do you have with the gala?
“As far as it goes, it would be a dream to be able to win and take the title, but the most important expectation is to make people enjoy themselves and to enjoy for a while the fantasy that has been worked on for so long. They have been very hard years for everyone, and even more so on the islands, so I would settle for that”.
-What led you to introduce yourself?
“It was very fanciful to imagine myself there, but I never saw myself on stage until Daniel Pagés contacted me on November 12 last year, a date that I will not forget. We are from the same municipality and we have friends in common. He is a designer that I have always followed, because he is always on the honor roll”.
-Would it also be a gift for Los Llanos de Aridane, a municipality that has suffered a lot in the last year?
“Yes, not only because of the eruption, but the fire on August 17 almost took away the house I grew up in. We had a very bad time and a month later the volcanic eruption occurred, which affected many relatives, friends and acquaintances, who have lost almost everything. Sadness is breathed in the Valley. So if I win, I can bring a bit of joy.”
-Did you prepare in any special way to be able to carry the fantasy?
“I am a very athletic person, I have sport as a lifestyle, because I believe that to have good mental health, sport is crucial. The hardest thing is the helmet, because it weighs a lot, many candidates say the same thing. For that reason, I had to work a little more and go to the physio, because I suffered”.
-Will you touch the sky with your hands if you are elected or will you continue to have it in the background?
“The bottom will still be there, but I hope to touch it, because it will be like a dream come true.”
-Have you managed to achieve that chemistry between candidate and designer?
“Ample. I think we are people who adapt very well to each other. But Daniel also has a very special way of being, because he is very good, very kind, very giving, he always wants everyone to be well, both the candidate and her team. I sympathize a lot with people who have a good aura.”
-Do you have your costume ready to live the Carnival after two years of pandemic?
“I hope I don’t need to wear a costume. But if so, I already have a couple of ideas. I’m a Star Wars fan, so that’s where the shots go. The saga hooks, but the old ones, those of The Empire Strikes Back. The problem is that this year it is celebrated in summer and they were very covered”.
