The municipal government formalizes economic aid to fishermen

The mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, accompanied by the councilor for the Economic Promotion area, Raquel García, signed the agreement by which the City Council grants a direct grant of 40,000 euros to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercedesfrom Los Cristianos, an entity on which more than 200 families in the municipality depend.

The objective of this contribution from the Consistory is to mitigate the economic complications caused to the collective of this segment of the primary sector during the two years lived in pandemic. With more than fifty boats and eighty professionals, the Brotherhood of Los Cristianos records average annual catches estimated at more than fifty tons of fish in the traditional way.

In one of the meetings held between José Julián Mena and the brotherhood, with the aim of address possible lines of collaboration with the sector, the representative of the local fishermen, Félix Melo, transferred to the alderman one of the projects in which the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercedes is immersed. It is about opening a direct sales point, for which they already have the authorization of the competent Administration.

The mayor of Arona recalled that this aid passed through the Plenary more than a year ago, but the opposition of the different groups did not make its approval possible until just a few weeks ago, he pointed out. «Now we have to celebrate that, finally, it is done justice with the brotherhood and with the families that depend on the artisanal fishing sectorthat they are going to have a direct subsidy to cover their needs and move on”, he explained.

The Councilor for Economic Promotion, Raquel García, stressed that “for the government group it was essential that the fishermen of Los Cristianos be able to benefit from public aid, as the Arona taxi drivers and small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) of the municipality». In agreement with the alderman, the also first deputy mayor spoke in the sense that «we wanted to carry out this subsidy a year ago, but we had to regret the opposition of the different groups. However, today it is a reality that we have to underline.
