Idayra Borges Tena will be the candidate of the designer Alexis Santana for next June 10 at the Gala for the Election of the Queen of Santa Cruz, a show in which she will parade with the Paraíso fantasy and will do so on behalf of Tecnocasa. Today, this young woman from Puerto de la Cruz, where she has also been Queen, in this case, of the Fiestas del Carmen in 2019, tells DIARIO DE AVISOS in this interview how she became a candidate with a design that had been made for another young man, who finally has not been able to present himself. She also talks about what she expects from her passage through the carnival 2022a participation with which, as he admits, he is fulfilling a dream.
-Who is Idayra beyond being a candidate for Queen?
“I am a student, yesterday I finished my second year of pharmacy at the University of La Laguna. The exams catch me right at the same time as the Gala, but I’m making an effort because my dream is to present myself as Queen of the Carnival. Apart from being a student, I dedicate myself to the world of modeling, both as a catwalk model and as a photographer and I have participated in three beauty pageants in which I have won”.
– Is it carnival?
“Like all Canarians, I am in love with Carnival. It is a celebration that I like very much, because it is not only a party, but also has a great tradition and history behind it. Every year I have seen the Gala, since I was little, because it is a family tradition that we love. Introducing myself was the thorn that I had stuck since I was little, for me it is a dream.
-How did you come to that dream of being a candidate for Queen? What does it mean to you?
“Alexis (Santana) already had another candidate to present herself when the Gala was going to be held in February, but, having been postponed, the candidate could not participate, so she thought of me; She contacted me by phone to meet, we met at her workshop and since she raised it with me, I didn’t hesitate for a second, I said yes. She tried the suit on me without officially being the candidate, because there were some measurements made for the other, but luckily it fit me perfectly and I managed to be the candidate”.
-How do you combine Carnival and studies?
“It’s a bit complicated because it’s not just the Carnival, but also preparing for the Gala, because you have to pull on a costume that’s quite heavy. To be able to combine it I have made a calendar to see what days I can dedicate to studying and how many to Carnival, as well as the days I have free, so I have three days a week left to go to train without fail”.
-Have you already seen the design you are going to wear? Can you advance us something?
“Those things cannot be said… Every candidate will say that her suit is beautiful, I think that my suit is a representation of myself, I feel very identified with the design and it goes a lot with my personality, which makes me wear it with more you win if possible, because I feel reflected in the suit”.
-What would it mean for you to be the next Carnival Queen of Santa Cruz de Tenerife?
“Just thinking about it gives me butterflies in my stomach. It would mean a lot, from the personal improvement that it implies, not only for physical preparation, but also for responsibility. But it would also mean knowing that I am something important to a historical party. I would try to assimilate the responsibility that I would have and feel proud of achieving something that many women from the Canary Islands have dreamed of achieving, I would also have them present”.
