SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 2 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The spokesman for the Government of the Canary Islands, Julio Pérez, has taken it for granted this Thursday that the archipelago will be exempt from the green tax on international flights with the islands, in line with what has happened with connections between islands and with the Peninsula until 2030.
In a press conference to give an account of the agreements of the Governing Council, the amendment to the rule has been valued by the socialist MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar, with 40 signatures of support, so that the Canary Islands, based on their legal status as RUP , is exempt from the measure.
The vote in the European Parliament will be next Monday and “it is likely that they will approve it” and the rate “will not apply”, and not only within the EU, but of the countries that are part of the European economic area.
However, he has warned that it is necessary to “continue in the battle” so that other countries do not want to apply similar measures, that the Canary Islands implement decarbonization measures and set “compensation” policies if any disorder is generated in the tourism market, for example .
Pérez has pointed out that the vote of the European Parliament “is not the last procedure” but with the endorsement of the European Parliament and the European Commission itself, he understands that the measure is virtually achieved, warning that other territories, which are not RUP, are also persecuting it .
AVERAGE INVESTMENT
The spokesman has also referred to the low budget execution of the State in the archipelago, which stood at 63% in 2021, four points below the national average.
He has indicated that the Canarian Government is not satisfied with these data because the State’s investments have to be fulfilled, but he suspects that there may be an “incidence” of the road agreement because the transferred investments are also included in the analysis.
“This is not good news and we have to be vigilant”, he underlined, although he noted that the Canary Islands are close to the average and that in many cases the national accounting system benefits Madrid and that “it takes a lot of effort” to materialize investments by the requirements of contract law.
