The elders of the network of resources of the Institute of Social and Socio-Health Care (IASS), autonomous body of council, celebrate the Day of the Canary Islands with more than 70 activities. Rather it is a Week of the Canary Islands, since the acts began a few days ago and will last until Wednesday. The agenda, integrated into the Conecta Mayores program, includes craft workshops, folk performances, Canarian cuisine and cultural outings
The insular counselor of Social Action, Marián Franquet, assures that it is not only intended to entertain the users, but also one more way for their full integration into society
The events are also aimed at people with disabilities who attend self-managed centers and those who, although they coordinate different entities, depend on the IASS.
Franquet explains that the agenda of activities has been designed around the value of traditions and the tastes of each group. “Circumstances and users are different, so we had to plan and develop different proposals in each case,” he explains.
Among the scheduled activities are Canarian cooking and pintaderas workshops, dessert contests, polka battles, intergenerational meetings or traditional dances. All of them are related to the culture of the Archipelago and the Canarian customs. At the same time, many of the centers will be visited by different folklore groups that will perform there, as well as some small festivals. Franquet also highlights the way in which these activities go beyond pure entertainment: “We not only want to entertain the elderly, but we must bring them closer to the public and collaborate so that they integrate into the community.”
For the island councilor, these events, which include attending different cultural events, are a tool for the full integration of dependent people in society.
Although many of the events have taken place throughout the month of May, most of them will be concentrated around Monday the 30th and the following days.
