SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 26 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, has brought to the plenary session of the island a proposal to initiate the file for the awarding of the Gold Medal of the Island to Club Deportivo Tenerife, in the year of the centenary of its foundation.
“Without a doubt, the white and blue colors of CD Tenerife’s luggage are a binding element of Tenerife society and represent the values of effort and perseverance that have been evidenced in a centennial curriculum, which is also celebrated this year in which there are many chances of returning to the top national category”, stated the president of the Cabildo.
“For this reason, from the Island Institution we believe that the trajectory and the role it plays in Tenerife society make this entity worthy of holding the highest distinction offered by the Government of the Island,” he added.
During the hundred years that have elapsed since its foundation, CD Tenerife has actively participated in the sporting and socioeconomic life of the Island that gives its name to the Institution. And although its headquarters were established in the capital, where it also undertook the construction of a new gaming venue -the Stadium inaugurated in 1925, where the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stands today-, the feeling of Tenerife spreads throughout the island’s geography, in each and every one of its municipalities.
The Island Councilor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, pointed out that this distinction “would recognize how much the Club Deportivo Tenerife has contributed, throughout its history, to the Island and the people of Tenerife. A centenary that also coincides with the magnificent season that the Blue and Whites have done and that could culminate in a return to the highest category”.
Rivero added that the “very great” fans of Tenerife are experiencing this final stretch of the League with great enthusiasm and explained that the distinction along with promotion “would be a magnificent finishing touch to this centenary that all Tenerife residents would end up celebrating in the Plaza de España”.
CD Tenerife has participated in thirteen seasons in the First Division, obtaining its best classification in two of them, fifth position in the 1992-1993 and 1995-1996 competitions. In the Second Division the team has been present for forty-four seasons and eight seasons in the Second Division. In the Third Division three competitions and thirty-one seasons in regional competition.
In Europe, Tenerife has played in two UEFA Cups, reaching the semi-finals in the 1996-1997 season. In the Copa del Rey they have participated in sixty-four editions, being a semi-finalist club in 1993-1994. And on three occasions they have played in the League Cup, where they obtained their best classification in 1982-83, where they reached the quarterfinals.
