The restoration of the hermitage of El Socorro does not yet have a project nor, therefore, is the cost of the necessary work known. To carry out the works and to finance them, the signing of an agreement between the Bishopric, the council and the City Council, as explained by the mayor of Güímar, Gustavo Pérez, who assures that “the Consistory has collaborated at all times and will continue to collaborate with the rehabilitation of the hermitage of El Socorro.”
The güimarero alderman reaffirms that the City Council “will agree with the Bishopric, Cabildo and Mayordomía” the rehabilitation of this temple whose origin dates back to the end of the 16th century. At present, the property presents the pathologies typical of the state of deterioration of the roof and lack of maintenance.
Within the framework of a meeting held at the Insular Palace on February 23, “all parties agreed to speed up the rehabilitation file for the El Socorro hermitage.” The president of the Cabildo, Peter Martin; the mayor of Güímar, Gustavo Pérez; the Councilor for Urban Planning, Airam Puerta; the insular director of Historical Heritage, Emilio Manuel Fariña; the parish priest of Güímar, Pedro José Pérez; the stewardship of El Socorro and the drafting architect of the preliminary project.
The work carried out from that moment, aimed primarily at determining the actions that should be carried out in the temple, was completed on April 17 in the hermitage itself. with the signing of the contract for the drafting of the project. Officialized act “in the presence of the parish priest of the municipality, the steward and the drafting architect,” says the güimarero alderman. “At the moment, the delivery of the final project is pending, which, in turn, will determine the total cost of the work,” concludes Gustavo Pérez.
The hermitage of the village of El Socorro was declared Well of Cultural Interest (BIC), with monument category, by the Government of the Canary Islands, in session 1990.
