SAN SEBASTIAN DE LA GOMERA, May 21. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The spokesman for the Gomeran Socialist Group Parliamentary Group (ASG), Casimiro Curbelo, demanded this Saturday that the Government of the Canary Islands “continue working” so that the fuel tax does not increase the deficits of the Outermost Regions (RUP).

In a statement, the deputy announced that he will challenge the regional executive to find out how the measures included in the Objective 55 strategy planned by the European Union for the ORs affect and prevent said tax from increasing the deficits of these territories.

In this way, he specified that the exceptionality of the islands must be guaranteed to avoid the application of fuel taxes as of 2023.

“We know that this exception will be made with flights between the ORs and their respective continental territories of Spain, Portugal and France. However, it remains to be seen what will happen with inter-island connectivity, flights that come from the rest of Europe and also in the maritime transport,” warned Curbelo.

Similarly, he pointed out that, although the high inflation and the rise in fuel “have already been noted in airfares”, the possible introduction of a tax of this type “would be a negative addition to the recovery of the islands , which would affect both residents in this territory and tourists who want to come to the Canary Islands”.

He also recalled that the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union itself states that in those measures that may affect these territories, the special characteristics of these locations must be taken into account.

For this reason, he insisted on advancing on this path and addressing this situation, together with the rest of the demands that these regions pose in terms of fishing, agriculture and demography.
