SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE/MADRID, 18 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Canary Islands have recovered the volume of international passengers last April with a total of 1.1 million, just 0.2% less than in April 2019 and 924.9% more than in the same month last year, which represents 15.9% of the national market share, according to data released this Wednesday by Turespaña.

However, in the accumulated of the first four months of the year it is still 17% below the previous figures of the pandemic, with a total of four million passengers.

Until April, Spain received a total of 18.72 million passengers from international airports, which represents an increase of 658.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, although it still represents 26.1% less than in 2019, according to data released this Wednesday by Turespaña.

In April, the Tenerife Sur airport was the one that presented the best indicators with an increase of 4.1% and 429,146 passengers, followed by Fuerteventura (+0.1%), with 172,824 passengers; Lanzarote (-0.7%), with 216,328 and Gran Canaria, which dropped 2.5% in the last year and remained at 282,495 passengers.

In the country as a whole, the international passenger traffic of low-cost airlines, with a weight of 57.4%, in the first four months was 14 times higher (+1,309%) compared to the same period last year, while traditional companies, with the remaining 42.6%, had an advance of 367% compared to 2020.

In the month of April, these passengers reached 6.9 million, which is 755.1% more than in the same month of 2021 and only 14.4% less than in 2019, approaching the pre-pandemic figures. 60.9% traveled in low-cost companies and 39.1% in traditional airlines.

In April, 58.4% of the total number of passengers came from the European Union, experiencing an increase of 621.3% (-22.9% compared to 2019), while the flow from the rest of the world, which represented the The remaining 41.6% grew by 717.5% (-30.1% compared to 2019).

“The good Easter campaign that we anticipate has propelled the degree of recovery of tourist flows in the month of April, confirming a gradual growth trend that has been maintained since the beginning of the year”, said the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism , Reyes Maroto, in a statement regarding these data.

UNITED KINGDOM, THE MOST GROWING MARKET

According to data from Turespaña, in terms of the increase in international passengers registered in April in the main issuing countries compared to the same month in 2021, the United Kingdom is the country that has grown the most, multiplying last year’s figures by 60 ( +6,760%).

Specifically, this was the country that generated the highest number of arrivals to Spain in April, accumulating 23% of the total number of travellers, exceeding 1.6 million.

The second issuing country of international passengers to Spain was Germany, with 1.12 million travelers in April. It was followed by France (597,070 passengers), Italy (596,349), the Netherlands (389,031), Belgium (264,044), Switzerland (253,465) and Portugal (213,432).

MADRID AND THE BALEARIC ISLANDS, MAIN COMMUNITIES OF DESTINATION

In April, the Community of Madrid was the main Autonomous Community of destination for international passengers, accumulating 21.6% of total arrivals and with 1.5 million passengers

It is followed by Catalonia (19.3% and 1.3 million passengers), the Balearic Islands (16.4% 1.13 million passengers), the Canary Islands (15.9% and 1.1 million) and Andalusia (12.7% and 882,770 passengers).

All the autonomous communities registered falls in international travelers compared to 2019, with Catalonia (-25.8%) and Madrid (-19.3%), the most.

By airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas was the one that received the highest volume of international passengers in April (21.6% of the total), followed by Barcelona-El Prat (18.1%), Palma de Mallorca airport ( 13.5%), that of Malaga (10.1%) and Alicante (7.5%).
