SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 9. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Association of Public Health Inspectors has announced this Monday that it will resume the protest rallies on May 16 in Gran Canaria and on May 20 at the gates of the Parliament of the Canary Islands given that there has been “no progress” after the agreement with the Canarian Health Service (SCS) that put an end to the strike, “which is causing chaos in public health”.
Along these lines, they state in a statement that “the neglect on the part of the administration and its lack of concern for the health of all canaries has caused food alerts that have occurred recently, such as that of Kinder eggs, Buitoni pizzas and others, are not being carried out with the speed that these serious situations require, as the administration does not provide the necessary means to carry out the inspection visits correctly, and sometimes they are being managed by telephone, with the risks that this entails”.
In fact, they point out that “private vehicles have had to be made available to the administration to deal with food poisoning as well as other actions,” and the complaints “are also being affected by this situation, not being properly addressed.”
Likewise, they comment that “most of the scheduled food sampling for official control is not being carried out with the aim of guaranteeing safety, for the protection of consumers” and in the field of environmental health, “the situation is so serious that in the case of the island of Tenerife it has not been possible to carry out checks after detecting contamination or to collect some samples of seawater, which are part of the ‘Bathing Water Sanitary Surveillance’ programme, which also of the risks for bathers, would cause some municipalities to lose the blue flag on their beaches next season”.
All this has been brought to the attention of the administration “repeatedly” in recent weeks but “it has not provided any solution,” they lament.
In some islands, they continue, “the worst situation for public health in recent years is being experienced”
