SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 5 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, described this Thursday as “magnificent and very good data” those related to international tourism in March, with more than 1.1 million visitors and 1,680 million spent.
Speaking to journalists after presenting ‘AgroCanarias’, he pointed out that the end of that month “has been above expectations” and therefore he believes that the archipelago can end the year with some 10 million visitors.
Torres recalled that the end of winter was complicated by the restrictions imposed on the travel of children from the United Kingdom and the sharp increase in Covid-19 infections at the beginning of January, but “it was foreseeable” that tourism would rebound when the cases dropped and vaccination was consolidated.
He has commented that the proper functioning of tourism “is essential” for the economy of the Canary Islands, although he has not hidden that the invasion of Ukraine has opened up a scenario of “uncertainty” due to the rise in the price of goods and the possible rise in the price of tickets. of the flights.
However, he commented that “it is important that these numbers can be maintained and the forecasts are good for the summer” given that there is “security” with the reservations and the desire to come to the Canary Islands.
Torres has specified that although there is “a certain normality” in the subsector from his Executive they are “on alert and vigilance” to take measures if necessary, including lowering airfares, although a large increase in ticket prices.
