The consequences of the debate on the state of the Island unleash political tension in the Council of Tenerife. The opposition blockade, including Yes We Can Canary Islands –despite his external support for the PSOE and Cs government–, the investment of 126 million euros of the remaining budget has an answer. The insular president, the socialist Peter Martin, will convene a new extraordinary plenary session on a date to be defined to approve the items destined for projects of general interest. The leader of C’s Enrique Arriaga, trusts that PP and CC «at least abstain this time». Canarian Coalition, with Carlos Alonso at the head, asks Martín to submit to a matter of trust “before the weakness of his government.” The purple formation maintains its position against the subsidy to the Motor Circuit, the spark of the conflict, and announces that they will not support the motion.
new plenary
Pedro Martín anticipates that he will once again take full approval of the 5.1 million item for the works of the track, the building and the paddock of the Motor Circuit. The insular president reaffirms his commitment to infrastructure. He claims not to understand how the Canary Coalition, “which seemed to defend it for 30 years, now changes its mind to prevent it from going forward because it does not govern.” He considers that “they oppose to try to destabilize and generate pressure on this government.”
The island president maintains his “commitment” to the Motor Circuit, the ‘spark’ of the conflict
Regarding the motion of confidence, Martín underlines: «It is the last occurrence of CC». He adds: “He does it just after having voted against numerous economic items for Tenerife and the people of Tenerife.” He summarizes: “If Alonso is so convinced of what he wants to do, that he present a motion of censure and propose himself as a candidate.” He concludes: “Meanwhile, the Cabildo government will continue to work.”
«The occurrence of CC is the motion of confidence after rejecting key projects for Tenerife»
Martín recalls that “for three years this group has governed without a majority.” However, “we have been able to carry out issues of great importance for Tenerife, always with a negotiation effort,” he values. On the contrary, “Alonso and his party have dedicated themselves to hindering government action,” he says.
“Indignant”.
Enrique Arriaga emphasizes that he will do “everything possible” so that a plenary session is convened where the blocked budget modification can be approved again. A session, he adds, “in which the PP and CC can change the direction of their vote to repair the serious mistake they have made with Tenerife.” Arriaga details that “the opposition prevents the execution of programs to combat unemployment, research, the environment, mobility, education, culture or tourism promotion.” He adds that “Canarian Coalition, Partido Popular and Sí Podemos Canarias stop the progress of the Island for a simple headline.” Regarding Sí Podemos Canarias, he indicates that “the origin of everything is the opposition to the Tren del Sur”. He criticizes that “they have even rejected their own amendments to the remnant.”
“This government is weak and we ask it to seek a great agreement and that unity prevails”
The spokesperson for the orange formation points out that “the list of actions that cannot be carried out is very long. The bloodiest are those that were aimed at alleviating unemployment, such as the seven million item allocated to municipalities for the hiring of unemployed people or the million euros for the PONOS project for the youth population.
Arriaga also denounces that “they block a provision of ten million for the purchase of buses, or 2.5 million to offset the extra cost of fuel and thus avoid a rise in bus and tram tickets.” Other areas in which items have been pending are the primary sector, Works, Innovation, Culture and Sports. He criticizes “CC’s tacticism” on the issue of trust.
Podemos ratifies its position on spending the remainder and rejects supporting the motion of confidence
Confidence motion.
The CC-PNC group asks the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, “to submit to a matter of confidence in the face of the weakness of his government.” The nationalist formation indicates that it is willing to dialogue and reach agreements so that “the Cabildo is useful to the citizenry”
“I am outraged by the sheer political tacticism against vital projects for the Island and the people”
The CC spokesman, Carlos Alonso, values ”the unstable situation due to the PSOE.” Alonso indicates that “there are 126 million remaining that cannot be used because Pedro Martín is in a minority and his government is weak.” He asks that it be submitted to a matter of trust as established in article 197 bis of the Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime and seek “a great agreement for the good of Tenerife.” He points out that “two years ago we offered the PSOE a coalition government and it rejected it. Now we extend our hand again to approve the great affairs of the Island». But, he concludes, “it’s not about imposing when you don’t have a majority and, on top of that, blaming the opposition.”
Yes We Can does not move.
Sí Podemos Canarias defends its refusal to support the amendments to the remainder. The reason is the budget modification to allocate almost 6 million euros to the Motor Circuit project. They emphasize that “Arriaga’s veto prevented a transactional amendment from being voted on to allocate that money to expand the public housing stock.” Regarding the extraordinary plenary session, the purple formation affirms that “if the obstacle of the Motor Circuit is overcome, we are willing to support the inclusion of the remainder.” They understand the question of confidence that CC asks for as “another desperate attempt to generate that false sensation of political instability.” They assert that “our external support has given the government solidity” and rule out that it will prosper.
