The ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, national leaders in passenger traffic in the first quarter



The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife closed the first quarter of the current year as the national leader in passenger traffic with 1.3 million. This represents 691,000 more than in the same period last year. Behind is the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, with 742,526 passengers.

The ports of the western province of the Canary Islands registered 1,040,874 passengers in the transport regime from January to March, 495,000 more than in 2021, and also a greater number of cruise passengers, which, with 209,316, improved compared to 2021 by more than 160,000 tourists.

Linked to this traffic is that corresponding to passenger cars which, with practically 340,000 units, places these ports in first place in the national port system, highlights the Port Authority.

Of the total, 458,615 passengers passed through the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 306,467 of them as passengers, which represents a positive 87%, and 142,365 arrived as cruise passengers, 120,400 more than from January to March last year.

As for the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the movement of merchandise corresponding to the first quarter of 2022 exceeded 2.3 million tons of total traffic, 156,831 more than in the same period of 2021, which translates into a percentage increase of 7.15%.

Special weight in this positive is the improvement of 6.7% registered in general merchandise, close to 1.4 million tons, and 12.3% in liquid bulk, with 769,883 tons, 84,410 more than in the same period of the last year, adds the Port Authority.

There is also a notable rise in container movement, with 58,500 units in the first quarter, 3.5% more. The percentage of containerized merchandise was a positive of 1%, with 831,899 tons, 8,200 more.

Until April, the port of Tenerife received, in terms of the number of merchant ships, 1,807 units, 288 more.
