Tenerife has closed its participation in the thirty-fifth edition of the ‘Salón Gourmets’ with a balance of more than 2,200 visitors, including importers, chefs, companies, sommeliers and professionals from the gastronomic and hotel industry, who were able to meet and taste some of the best products from the primary sector of the island such as extra virgin olive oil, cheese, honey, liqueurs or wines.
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Javier Parrilla, values in a note the impact that participation in this event has had, where the island has been consolidated as a gastronomic destination, making known the “rich variety of products and wines”.
In this sense, Parrilla emphasizes that the quality of the island’s products forces us to work on a new line of marketing towards gourmet products, and is convinced that Tenerife “has stood out and surprised with its proposal for this edition, which brought together innovation, tradition and sustainability”.
This Thursday, the resolution of the final of the twelfth edition of the Championship of the Best Cheeses of Spain was also announced, to which more than 800 samples from all over the country were presented.
Among them, two cheeses from Tenerife, a semi-cured smoked goat from the Quesería de Benijos and a cured sheep from ‘5senti2’, which were among the six best in their respective categories.
Among the visitors to the Tenerife stand, chefs such as Pedro Subijana, owner of the Akelarre restaurant, stood out; Moha Fedal, owner of Dar Moha in Marrakech; and Abraham García, patron of the Viridiana restaurant.
Gastronomic professionals such as Jonatan Armengol, blind journalist and critic; Luis Pacheco, manager of Gold Gourmet; David Manso, wine journalist, or María Ritter, director of the Repsol Guide.
Also notable was the presence of the Princess of Bulgaria, Carla Royo-Villanova, who visited the stand on several occasions, and the director of food and beverages at ICEX, Pedro Flores, as well as multiple blogs such as Zampate el mundo, Las Manos en la Mesa, Gastroamantes, De bodegas with the witch Viri or El Trotamantel.
Tenerife gastronomy in Madrid
In this edition of the ‘Salón Gourmets’, the homemade liquor factory La Vieja Licorería, located in La Esperanza; the Quesería de Benijos, with goat, cow or mixture cheeses and multifloral, chestnut and heather honeys from the El Productor brand, made by beekeeper Juan Carlos Martín Robles and framed within the Miel de Tenerife PDO.
Also present were the six appellations of origin for wines that operate on the island (Abona, Valle de la Orotava, Valle de Güímar, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Ycoden-Daute-Isora and Las Islas Canarias), and Piedra Alta, an olive oil superior category extra virgin, specialized in the picual and arbequina variety, which is produced in an artisanal way in Jardina (La Laguna).
The thirty-fifth edition of the ‘Salón Gourmets’ included 45,636 square meters, 800 activities and more than 1,600 exhibitors, in which more than 40,000 products could be seen. The event also included the participation of 120 importers expressly invited by the organization from 38 countries.
All leftover food will be donated to the Madrid Food Bank.
