Naturally sweet Reverón payments, made by Eugenio Reverón Sierra, from the DO Abona (Tenerife), has been recognized with the award for Best Canary Wine 2022 in the Official Agrocanarias Contest organized by the Canarian Institute of Agrifood Quality (ICCA), attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands.
This was announced today Wednesday by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, and the director of the ICCA, Basilio Pérez, after the jury’s decision in an edition that included the participation of 151 samples belonging to producers of all the Canary Islands with Denomination of Origin (DO), elaborated and bottled in the Archipelago.
As for the awards, the special distinction for the Best Image and Presentation 2022 went to the Presas Ocampo Origen wine, in the category of young red wines/barrel red wines, from the DO Tacoronte Acentejo, produced by Viticultura San Juan SL
The Great Gold Medal and Best Ecological Wine of the Canary Islands 2022 for Moments, in the category of aging wines, from the DO Valle de Güímar and produced by Bodegas Ferrera SL. Lastly, the Great Gold Medal and Best Wine Chosen by the Winemakers of the Canary Islands went to Agala Altitud 1318, in the category of young dry white wines/barrel-fermented white wines, from the DO Gran Canaria and produced by Bodegas Bentayga 1985. The councilor Alicia Vanoostende highlighted the variety, richness and quality of the wines of the Islands, highlighting the role of the vineyard “in its environmental perspective, as a firebreak, against soil erosion and, above all, its contribution to the landscape, priceless.”
Likewise, he pointed out that it is essential “to continue making consumers aware of the importance of local products, because behind that product there is economy and rural development.” “From the Ministry we will continue to decisively support the Chair of Agrotourism and Wine Tourism of the Canary Islands, all the agents of the primary sector, improving aid from POSEI, and with the aim of increasing the presence of wines from the islands on our tables,” said Vanoostende.
The director of the ICCA, Basilio Pérez, explained that the objective of Agrocanarias “focuses on improving the quality and promotion of wines, providing a quality label for award-winning productions and giving credibility to the sector in the face of an increasingly demanding consumer. “.
In this sense, he added that, in view of the results of previous editions, this contest “has been confirmed as an effective tool for the promotion of the sector; I congratulate all the participating wineries and I appreciate the work of the winemakers and viticulturists”.
A total of 22 tasters, including technicians, journalists, sommeliers or bloggers specialized in gastronomy, evaluated, according to the type of wine, 49 young dry whites/barrel-fermented white wines; 50 young reds/cask reds; 4 semi-dry; 26 semi-sweet; 4 sweets; 1 sweet malvasia; 9 dry rosés; 1 tea wine; 2 sparkling; and 5 breeding.
