Last March, the Madrid Public Prosecutor’s Office reached a conformity agreement with 19 of the 23 accused -among them, a policeman from Adeje- of integrating a network that he organized at a national and international level illegal dog fighting. Those responsible administered doping substances to the animals to improve their performance and subjected them to “cruel mistreatment” from birth. In the Archipelago these dog fights were also held in Tenerife.
The network was dismantled in 2017 in an operation carried out by the National Police on the Island, as well as in Madrid, Alicante, Murcia and Andalusia. The agents rescued 230 potentially dangerous dogs prepared to participate in the fights.
A pact in the courts that has raised the indignation of the Tenerife animal activists, who this Saturday, April 23, called on the population for “firm and fair sentences.” “They were silenced, not us”, was one of the slogans of the demonstration that started today around 11:00 a.m. from Plaza Weyler and ended the tour near the Cabildo de Tenerife.
The president of the Association for the Defense and Protection of Animals in the Canary Islands (Adepac), Yahaira Thovar, has declared that “it is unfortunate that Justice leaves this abuse unpunished”, with special emphasis on the work carried out by a person who “She was infiltrated for six months to obtain information about dog fights in Tenerife.”
He also assured that “we know that these illegal disputes still exist today”, but “harm to an animal will not go unpunished, we will not allow it”. “We are going to continue fighting for both fighting dogs and hunting dogs because the shelters are full,” adds the head of Adepac.
