Users of the Cabezo beach denounce the presence of jellyfish or large living waters in the area marked off for dogs, in front of the Yacht Club, in the municipality of Güímar. It is the species Physalia physalis or Portuguese Man-of-war and it is very important not to come into contact with them because, if they do, it has neurotoxic, cytotoxic and cardiotoxic consequences, producing very intense pain, and there have even been cases of death.
What to do if you get stung by a Portuguese man-of-war?
Remove remains of tentacles and/or jellyfish fragments
wash with sea water
Apply Hot packs or immersion in hot water (40º-45º) for 15′
If the pain persists, consult your doctor or health care professionals.
How to prevent
If we choose to enjoy a day at the beach, we must be attentive to the notices warning of the presence of jellyfish in the area and avoid bathing in those points of the coast.
How to act
If, despite having taken these precautions, any person presents symptoms, they should contact 112 and follow the instructions of the coordinating doctor of the SUC.
In the event of a bite, the area must be cleaned with soap and water, cold compresses applied several times and a specific cream applied to the affected area.
If in a short period of time the affected person starts with swelling of the lips, eyelids and/or a sensation of increased volume of the tongue, 112 should be called immediately, since we may be facing a serious allergic reaction.
In case of suffering a jellyfish sting, we must go to the beach aid station or the nearest doctor to assess the state of the affected area.
