Surprised after fishing more than 18 kilos of octopus with illicit gear and in a prohibited area in Tenerife

Agents of the Civil Guard belonging to the Main Post of Candelaria, in Tenerife, have surprised two people when they were carrying 18.6 kilos of octopus that they had just illegally captured.

The offenders, reports the armed body, have been proposed for various sanctions for various infractions of Law 17/2003 on Fishing in the Canary Islands, not only for the capture made in a prohibited area for it but for having used non-permitted fishing gear (boat hook -fixed).

The total number of pieces captured, 13 octopuses, also failed to comply with the limitation established in the regulations in relation to the maximum of 5 kilos of fishing for that species, as well as the fact that five of these pieces weighed less than 1 kilo, with the consequent risk that this entails for the species itself, hence its capture is prohibited.

According to the Civil Guard, both offenders are “regular fishermen” and had the mandatory fishing license, “which shows that they were fully aware of the offenses they were committing.”
