Sustainable Mobility of La Laguna launches ‘Pedaling in educational centers’ to promote the safe use of the bike

The Department of Sustainable Mobility of the City Council of La Laguna, directed by María José Roca, will start the training project on May 5 Pedaling in educational centers, a program that, in collaboration with the Cronotropo Association and the Mejor en Bici collective, will teach 350 students from six Primary and Secondary schools in the municipality how to use a bike and ride safely.

Until the end of the school year, specialized personnel and through the 1bici+ method will teach them to ride a bicycle from scratch, in closed circuits in the centers and with final training in peaceful urban environments of the municipality, all to guarantee knowledge about the basic rules of traffic and the causes and consequences of accidents, as well as promoting road education based on sustainability, safety, health and well-being.

The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility, Commerce and Tourism, María José Roca, assures that in La Laguna they have “committed to a new mobility model, as also demonstrated by our adherence to the Network of Cities that Walk and the Network of Cities for Bicycles , in which the participation and commitment of all citizens is essential, starting with children and the educational community”.

From the Sustainable Mobility Area they insist that action is being taken “from various fronts to, through the use of bicycles and in coexistence with pedestrian circulation and public transport, discourage the use of private vehicles on trips that could be perfectly covered. by non-polluting and more beneficial forms”, he explains. To do this, it will rely on a municipal cycling infrastructure, “in which we are already working and which is key to promoting the use of bicycles among citizens and increasing these figures”.

The Area is clear that, in addition to the network of bike lanes and other ongoing actions, such as the public bike rental system, training and dissemination are essential to promote this mobility model, with actions that include the workshops “Get closer to y pedalea”, a project recently carried out in several districts and which has been aimed at all people who want to learn to ride a bicycle in an easy, fast, fun way and without falling, but also at those who want to improve their skills with the bike and circulate safely in urban environments.

In terms of education, Roca highlights that “we are committed to the creation of safe school environments and paths and to developing a municipal model that encourages people to travel on foot, by bicycle or by public transport to schools, a job in which We continue to advance through the Local School Mobility Forum”, a cross-cutting, community and participatory work space that held its third session a few weeks ago.

In this first phase of “Pedaling in educational centers”, which will end on June 17, the centers included in the local STARS Network will participate, specifically, the CEIP Camino La Villa, San Matías and Camino Largo, and the IES Valle Guerra, Cabrera Pinto and San Benito.

The training will be developed in three levels, which will begin by teaching how to ride a bike from scratch and in a circuit closed to traffic, so that each student will develop the skills to perform basic maneuvers, such as starting, dynamic balance, braking and directionality.

In the second, students practice the use of brakes and gears, control of distances with fixed and mobile obstacles, and all the essential skills in driving control. Finally, level 3 will focus on basic street driving, for which it will take place in peaceful urban environments and in the presence of real traffic, obstacles, parked cars and other elements.
