Yesterday, Holy Wednesday escaped the rain, which made an appearance in La Laguna during the morning, and it was possible to celebrate without setbacks in the streets of Aguere. Up to four paces crossed the city during the afternoon-night. The Ecce Homo, popularly known as the Lord of the Straw, came out of the Cathedral, as did Our Father Jesus Nazareno and Our Lady of Solitude. He also paraded La Veronica and La Santa Faz from the San Benito parish. The cold lagoon and the pieces that the military band performed live, including La Saeta, also played a leading role during this appointment with local tradition.

The procession was the happy ending to that day that got on the nerves of some brothers. It could be felt at mid-morning in the Cathedral. Members of different brotherhoods worked in the temple to get everything ready for the parades in the afternoon and for the processions of the following days, which are the main days of Holy Week and which are celebrated with special emphasis in Aguere. And there was a certain concern there with the drizzle that was falling at that time on the City of the Adelantados.

The blood.

Daniel Redondo, the secretary of the Very Ancient and Venerable Brotherhood of the Blood of Christ and of the Holy Cross, was one of the brothers who were by the Cathedral. Redondo explained that this entity parades every Holy Wednesday and Good Friday together with the Ecce Homo through the streets of the city – in the second case in the Magna Procession, in which the vast majority of carvings participate. “We also go out on Good Friday in the Procession of Silence accompanying the Deceased Lord,” he added. The older brother of that brotherhood, the oldest in La Laguna, is called Pablo Aragón. “These have been complicated years and we are very excited and very eager to return to our old normality,” he said in the early afternoon and after the break caused by the pandemic, and stated: “There is a special illusion and respect for health measures ».

The Nazarene.

The counterpart from Aragon in the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is Tranquilino Velázquez, who also specifies that he was one of the founders of that group. He related that this brotherhood organization was established in 1953 by two brothers from the Colegio de La Salle, and stated that since the beginning students and parents of this educational center parade in it. He is in charge of two images: the Nazarene and Soledad. The first of them contains a particular story. «It was acquired in Valencia and arrived in La Laguna at the beginning of the 20th century. It could have been rescued from the church of San Agustín during the fire of 1964, although it had to be restored by the goldsmith Agustín Guerra Molina. This image replaces the original one, which is preserved in the monastery of Santa Clara, with which the meeting of Jesus with the Virgin, Saint John and the Magdalene on the way to Calvary was staged since the 17th century in the Plaza del Adelantado. the so-called Procession of the Step”, collects the website of the Board of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods of La Laguna.

Velázquez also dwelled on the effort involved in the preparations for the so-called waiters in the images. Although Holy Week focuses the activity of the brotherhood, he highlighted that they also carry out other actions during the year. “We are preparing some new hangers for the passage”, he advanced with his eyes already set on Easter 2023. Before that they will have to solve another hurdle: they have nowhere to store the thrones (the structures with wheels in which they take the carvings religious to the street) once Holy Week is over. That is why, he said, they are waiting for the City Council or the Cathedral Chapter to provide them with a place.

The Holy Face.

The passage of the Veronica and the Holy Face left from the parish of San Benito and carried out an independent procession, although it arrived at the Cathedral almost parallel to the last of the thrones of the parade, which was a joint procession. It is a brotherhood that joined the Board of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods in 1981 and that, in March of that year, “after the blessing of the image of Veronica, it came out for the first time in procession, incorporating Holy Week in La Laguna a new step and a new neighborhood, that of San Benito », exposes the website of the brotherhoods of La Laguna.
