The organizations in defense of the Republic on the islands have called for this April 14, Republic Day, a demonstration in Santa Cruz de Tenerife against the symbols of Francoism that still exist in the capital of Tenerife and in favor of regime change in Spain . The Republican Board of the Canary Islands and the Platform for the Republic of Tenerife have announced today, in the presentation of the acts that commemorate the 91st anniversary of the proclamation of the Spanish Republic, a joint protest against the Monument to Franco located on Avenida de Anaga and the rest of the Franco vestiges that violate the Law of Historical Memory.
A demonstration will tour Santa Cruz to demand the removal of Francoist vestiges
The demonstration against the Francoist vestiges will start from the Flower Clock of the García Sanabria Park in Santa Cruz at 7:00 p.m. and will end precisely at the Monument to Franco, where a manifesto will be read in defense of the Republic and against this symbol of the dictatorship. Before, at 6:00 p.m., there will be a tribute to the victims of Franco’s repression in the Fyffes prison, which will take place in the monument erected in their honor on Avenida Reyes Católicos in the capital.
In the presentation of these two acts against the Francoist vestiges in the capital of Tenerife, Manuel de la Rosa, a member of the Platform for the Republic, intervened, who assured that the Republic defends “a future where social justice and freedoms are our horizon ”. De la Rosa also recalled that “in the Canary Islands it is estimated that more than 5,000 people were killed by the totalitarian regime of the dictator Franco, for defending the ideas of hope and social rights against the tyrannical regime.”
For his part, José Luis Escohotado, representative of the Republican Junta of the Canary Islands, has assured that “it is scandalous that Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the last redoubt in our country where the symbols of exaltation of Francoism have not yet disappeared”. Escohotado has affirmed that “the new generations woke up to the new process of recovering democracy in Spain with the 15M movement, and now a new constitutional process can be started that addresses the democratization of the country”
In addition, Pilar Larrodé, an activist for the Republic, took the floor, encouraging “massive participation in the events in commemoration of the Republic this Thursday, both in the tribute to the victims of Francoism in Fyffes and in the subsequent demonstration” and recalled that on May 14th a popular consultation will be held throughout Spain to choose between Monarchy or Republic.
