SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 5 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has recognized this Tuesday that his Executive has not had it “easy” in this legislature due to the pandemic and the price crisis, but he is convinced that they will turn the indicators around archipelago social.
In response to a question from the Mixed Group, he commented that the difficulties that have arisen “will remain in history” and in this context he commented that “helping vulnerable families” is an objective of his management.
He has said that it is his “responsibility and obligation” to deliver a “better” Canary Islands in 2023 than the one they received and for this reason he has defended the hiring of more teachers and health workers, that social protection via PCI and Minimum Vital Income be quintupled or the plan concerted social services has doubled to 41 million.
Likewise, he explained that unemployment has improved in March, that aid to victims of sexist violence has tripled since 2019 and that an “effort” has been made to fight poverty — it is the community in which it grows the least — although it is “chronified”.
The spokeswoman for the Mixed Group, Vidina Espino, pointed out that despite the fact that the unemployment figures for March are good, there are still more than 200,000 unemployed on the islands and 630,000 people in poverty, and “every day it is more difficult to fill the fridge and pay the bills for skyrocketing inflation that is eating up salaries and pensions.
He has pointed out that the Government “is collecting more than ever” and has asked Torres not to “collect more at the expense of families who do not make it to the end of the month.”
Thus, he has indicated that the Government “also has to make sacrifices” because the presidency “is more expensive” than in 2019, with three million more, the cost of public bodies has doubled to 200 million and spending on personnel has increased , “with 450 million more” but “the result is not seen”.
Espino has commented that the people of the Canary Islands are “tired of hearing the refrain” that the Government has suffered “all the misfortunes in the world” and has urged Torres to “react at once”.
