The 21st century brought multimillion-dollar investments to Isorano soil to create unique tourist complexes for the most select market. The first results, the Abama and Palacio de Isora hotels, are an example and reference in the sector, in addition to serving as a model and setting the standard for the next projects to be carried out in a municipality that stands out in the five-star segment of the Canary Islands and Spanish.
The five-star and great luxury resorts The Ritz-Carlton Abama and Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora, in addition to Las Terrazas de Abama, make up an offer that distinguishes Guía de Isora as a tourist destination of great quality and sustainable development. Its climate, its middle range and, especially, its gastronomy give it added value which, in the case of the kitchen – it has three Michelin Stars of the eight that exist in the Canary Islands (five in Tenerife)–, responds to that commitment to the maximum to be a reference in the world holiday market.
“The work carried out in these years has placed us as an authorized voice in tourism policies.” These words were pronounced on the first day of the 2019 International Tourism Fair (Fitur) by the Isorano mayor, Pedro Martín. Fourteen years earlier, Guía de Isora arrived at the highest level of tourism, with the opening of the Abama hotel in November 2005. Three later (2008), the Palacio de Isora came into service. Along these lines, Josefa Mesa, mayor who relieves Martín after 24 years as alderman, advances in the materialization of the five major tourism projects that will consolidate the Isorano destination as a benchmark.
Abama.
Tropical Hotels, a Polanco family chain, was the first to commit to building in Guía de Isora. In the work, today in the hands of Abama Luxury Residence, the investment already exceeds 500 million euros and will continue to grow: The Ritz-Carlton Abama, Las Terrazas de Abama Suites or Los Jardines de Abama Suites are exclusive hotels, apartments and villas that they are complemented by projects for residential use in progress or completed, such as the Bellevue and Las Atalayas de Abama developments. The future lies in expanding the 18-hole golf course –created by a legend of this sport, Dave Thomas– with another 9 holes and would complete the 27 planned from the original project– and by Tennis Villas, a set of 23 individual villas and 158 apartments.
This complex is developed in 190,000 meters of building land that combines tourist, residential and commercial use. The genesis, the Abama hotel, was designed as an oasis by the architect Melvin Villarroel. It has 527 rooms, of which 69 are suites. Gastronomy is one of its claims. In its ten restaurants, today it has three Michelin Stars, two of which are managed by Martín Berasategui, MB, and Abama Kabuki, focused on Japanese cuisine.

It occupies 87,000 square meters of land located on the seafront. This project of the Meliá Group and designed by the architects Álvaro Sans and Hermenegildo Domínguez, began its construction in 2006. It was inaugurated by the current King of Spain, Felipe VI, on July 1, 2008. The resort has 180 suites, six garden villas , 53 VIP rooms and 3,000 square meters of children’s area. The imposing dome of 14 meters in diameter that presides over the entrance to the hotel stands out and is visible from almost any corner of it. In its construction they invested 260 million euros.
On going.
With the two aforementioned brands, Guía de Isora has been on the map of luxury destinations for fifteen years. Despite the fact that since 2017 there have been five great luxury initiatives on the table, Josefa Mesa was and is optimistic. Last November, the Grupo Los Menceyes announced that it will invest around 100 million euros to build a hotel and apartments in Playa San Juan, in the Costa San Juan sector partial plan, with a surface area of 267,000 square meters. The hotel would have 600 beds and the tourist apartments, 500. In addition to hotel and residential use, the development of this initiative includes commercial premises, facilities and public areas. Urbanization works could begin this year.
Last Thursday, the Plenary gave the green light to the Maguenes partial plan, of 854,000 square meters, which includes the Maguenes Resort hotel, the first designed by the architect Norman Foster in the Canary Islands. Designed as a Canarian terrace and blending in with its surroundings, it will have 900 beds in its 84,000 square meters, which adds to the 500,928 of the 18-hole dirt golf course – designed by Gary Player and adjacent to Abama, so that a joint 45-hole course would be created–, as well as the 99 residential spaces of the 33 high-class villas.
The offer would be completed with another of the luxury projects with a bio-sustainable approach that Villa Erques will build, on the border between Adeje and Guía de Isora. It will have 930 beds on a plot of 150,000 square meters. The project is finalized at the expense of the highway authorization. The same happens with the one that will be developed in 250,000 square meters next to Cueva del Polvo, to be carried out by the company Primpares, with Russian financing.
«I believe that with these projects the development that we want in our commitment to differentiated and high-quality tourism will be clogged. We defend the balance between development and the territory”, defends the mayor.
