The City Council of Guía de Isora promotes the use of bicycles in the school environment. To do this, within the framework of draft space4people develops road safety workshops, which are taught by members of the Local Police and experts in mobility with sustainable transport. In addition, the Consistory proceeds to install bike racks in all the schools of the municipality.
In this way, the Early Childhood and Primary Education Centers (CEIP) of Guía de Isora become the first to benefit from the new initiative promoted by the municipal government to promote mobility and sustainable urban development.
“It is about promoting pedestrian mobility and offering the population alternatives to the use of private vehicles,” explains the Councilor for Socioeconomic Development, Lorraine Medina. He recalls that “a few months ago we carried out a pilot test in the urban center of Guía de Isora and, now, we can see the possibilities that this type of organization can offer to improve the use of public space.”
The initiative is part of a European exchange and learning program in urban development, ‘Space4people’
In detail, the local government reports that throughout this week the workshops are given by the Local Police and a specialized company. During them, they explain to the students everything related to the maintenance and correct use of the bicycle, including tours inside the educational centers and also in the urban area. At the same time, the installation of bicycle parking spaces in the seven Isoran academic centers is carried out.
The action is part of the Urbact program, a European project for exchange and learning in sustainable and integrated urban development, encompassing 550 cities, 29 countries and 7,000 active local agents. Among them, Guía de Isora is one of the ten participating European cities, in fact it is the only municipality in the Canary Islands.
To materialize this project, the Isorano City Council has the involvement of the departments of Citizen Security, Signaling and Transport; Training, Leisure and Free Time; in addition to the area of Municipal Services and Sports. Likewise, it has the collaboration of the company awarded the program, Grupo Muse, which, in turn, has the specialized companies Mejor en Bici and Crono Tropo.
