The Department of Equality of the City Council of Puerto de la Cruz has recently launched, in collaboration with the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Yedra project for the prevention and training on gender-based violence and disability, after the completion in June 2021 of the diagnosis on gender violence and disability in the municipality.
The initiative was presented yesterday by the mayor, Marco González; the Island Councilor for Equality and Prevention of Gender Violence, Priscila de León, and the Councilor for Equality, Carolina Rodríguez, who were accompanied by Ángela Martín Pérez, president of the Mercedes Machado Feminist Association.
This initiative, promoted by the Consistory and co-financed by the Island Corporation, aims to respond to some of the needs detected and demands raised by the professionals and entities participating during the study carried out last year within the framework of the Frida project.
The name Yedra, a plant that rises and overcomes all obstacles, was chosen for this collaborative project, as it evokes the image of generating networks, which are essential both for the good work of professionals and for the empowerment of women. Its general objective is to prevent sexist violence through awareness and training. To this end, a series of actions will be developed aimed at informing, raising awareness and training both women with disabilities and professionals from entities and resources linked to the care of women with disabilities and/or victims of gender-based violence, fostering coordination and promoting the creation and consolidation of networks.
Regarding the specific objectives, awareness and information regarding gender-based violence for women in Puerto de la Cruz, especially those who are especially vulnerable due to their disability, is considered a priority, in addition to training staff in gender-based violence. technician of all municipal services, health centers and resources and entities that usually attend to this group, providing them with knowledge and tools for approaching and referring these cases.
