The Aqualia company has developed, with the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Puerto de la Cruz City Council, a project to provide “a sustainable and definitive solution to the historical excess of nitrates that affects the aquifer of the Valle de La Orotava and the drinking water supply of the tourist city ». The use of a reverse osmosis system, with state-of-the-art membranes inspired by the functioning of the human kidney, “has made it possible to sustainably remove up to 97% of nitrates from water and has marked the beginning of the end of a restriction that affected at least since 2007 to pregnant women and babies under three months, who could not drink tap water or food cooked with it, “advances Aqualia.
“In all cases, water of excellent quality is obtained, with 98.5% less salt and barely 3% of the initial amount of nitrates. In addition, thanks to the new membranes, up to 22% more treated water is produced or, if preferred, the same amount of water can be obtained but with 22% less energy consumption”, details the company.
In Icod de los Vinos, Aqualia has also installed a pilot plant at the El Reventón Desalination Station, with an innovative system that improves water quality.
