SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 19. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, defended this Saturday that any proposal that is put on the table regarding Western Sahara has to be accepted by the kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front.
In statements to the media, Ángel Víctor Torres clarified that there is still no agreement on the Sahara, but only a letter in which President Sánchez expresses his opinion saying that the solution that seems most reasonable is to take autonomy for the Sahara as a basis. Sahara, a proposal that José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero made in 2008 and that was not modified by the Popular Party, Torres recalled.
The Canarian president indicated that the Parliament of the Canary Islands has clearly expressed itself on this matter through a solution to the conflict that is “durable, fair and accepted” by both parties, with which “any proposal that is put on the table has to be accepted by the kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front. If there is no agreement, there is no proposal,” he reiterated.
Ángel Víctor Torres understands that solutions must be found to a conflict that has lasted nearly 50 years, which must be done with respect for human rights and, if possible, as soon as possible and always with the United Nations as a guarantee.
