SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 17. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Government Council of the Canary Islands has approved this Thursday the Decree by which the municipality of Villa de La Matanza de Acentejo is granted the title of ‘Histórica’ and the incorporation of this distinction to its heraldic shield is authorized.
This badge, which was requested by the Town Council last year, is granted once the Heraldic Commission of the Autonomous Community has issued a favorable report.
In this concession, the Canarian Executive has applied the procedure for granting titles to the municipalities, as well as for the incorporation of the aforementioned titles in the municipal coat of arms, which is foreseen in the Order of November 15, 1990, of the Ministry of the Presidency .
Said order regulates the procedure to be followed for the approval, by the Autonomous Community, of heraldic shields, coats of arms and flags of the islands and municipalities of the Archipelago, to the files that are processed for the concession to the Local Corporations of treatments, honors and distinctions, as well as for the granting to islands and municipalities of titles, slogans and dignities.
In accordance with said procedure, the report of the Heraldic Commission of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, held in the session held on February 10, 2022, has been obtained. Said commission bases the granting of the title of ‘Histórica’ to the Villa de La Matanza de Acentejo in which, traditionally, the granting of these municipal honorary distinctions has been coupled with the recognition and proclamation of events of great importance, which deserve to be remembered in historical texts, and whose importance can be confined to the local area itself or exceed the same.
Thus, it points out that, in this case, there are sufficient merits to be publicly honored with the granting of the privilege of using the title of ‘Historical’. In this regard, it highlights that “in the massacre or defeat of Acentejo, which occurred in 1494, the conquerors were defeated by the aborigines, who, taking advantage of the conditions of the land that they knew very well, locked up the Castilians and their allies and attacked them , assuming the delay in the conquest plans of the Adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo”.
With this distinction, the municipality of La Matanza de Acentejo will have to adhere to its heraldic shield, under the tip, a silver ribbon with the legend in saber and in capital letters of the title of ‘Villa Histórica’
