The citizen protest for safe access to La Rambla reaches the Government of the Canary Islands

The residents of the neighborhood The Ramblaalso known as El Rosario, in San Juan de la Ramblatransferred this Friday, March 18, 2022, their protest to demand a safe link with the TF-5 highway outside of the seat of the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islandson Santa Cruz of Tenerife. Around fifty rambleros gathered for an hour to demand an immediate and provisional solution while a definitive project is carried out that guarantees security at the entrances and exits to this coastal core.

Adela Abreu, one of the spokespersons for this group, explained to EL DÍA that their protests will continue “until we have a solution on the road, even if it is with provisional yellow stripes.” For these neighbors, the commitment of the Council of Tenerife to build an underpass for vehicles and pedestrians to end this black spot on the island roadsand require some provisional measure applicable immediately.

Nor do they give up the possibility of making a turn in the direction of Santa Cruzwhich prevents them from having to circulate to the hull of San Juan de la Rambla to make a change of direction. They consider it “illogical” that they be made to travel almost 6 kilometers to make this turn safely.

Those affected by a problem that has lasted more than 42 years insist that a possible solution would be to enable a central lane to allow entry and exit to the neighborhood in both directions, “just as it exists on the Agaete highway at the intersection towards Bañaderos, on the island of Gran Canaria”. A proposal that from the Roads area of the Cabildo de Tenerife It doesn’t look technically feasible.

They are also not satisfied with the bus stop works in this area, since “there is no pedestrian itinerary enabled to cross and be able to access the stop in the direction to the Valley of La Orotava and Santa Cruzand they have used the car parks of a group of houses from the 18th and 19th centuries to enable the other stop, and now where will these neighbors leave their cars?”, they ask.

“The protests are going to continue”, warn these residents of San Juan de la Rambla on the day in which they have decided to transfer their complaints from the crossroads of the controversy to the headquarters of Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands.

Last February, the councilor responsible for the Roads area of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Enrique Arriagaraised the City Hall of San Juan de la Rambla and to the neighborhood platform All for La Rambla an access solution similar to the one that exists in the relief beachon The Realejos. This guarantees that there is no crossing of vehicles and that pedestrians and public transport users can cross the TF-5 safely. However, the turn towards Santa Cruz is not initially planned due to lack of space.

Arriaga It has recognized that “it is not a simple action” and that it is still pending environmental processing, study of alternatives, drafting of the project, adjudication and execution of works. A solution that will take time, which is why the Cabildo said a month ago that it is about finding a provisional solution, although it is not easy due to the characteristics of the road, the orography of the place and the proximity of a protected natural space Ravine Ruiz.

The protests of the residents of The Rambla They began in January and, since then, every Sunday they have concentrated on the controversial intersection to show their rejection of the lack of short-term solutions. Neither is the project for the section of the insular ring between San Juan de la Rambla, La Guancha and Buen Paso, in Icod de los Vinosproposes no solution for this black point, despite being a project valued at more than 175 million euros.
