This facility houses four people and will soon double its capacity to respond to the increase detected by municipal Social Services and third-sector entities of young people who are homeless or occupying a building that does not meet the minimum habitability conditions. A profile, the mayor of Social Welfare, Rubens Ascanio, points out in a statement, which “is not the usual homeless person and that he needed an urgent response.”

Ascanio emphasizes that La Laguna has opted for a system that, as opposed to the shelter model, assists small groups in supervised flats and is supported by a social integration program for users that has professionals in social work, psychology, social education or employability.

This makes it possible to intervene with people who are going through the process of eviction or a situation of homelessness and accompany them in the transition towards a phase where they can afford to pay rent and improve their personal situation, explains Ascanio.

This professional support team offers comprehensive care, with advice and legal, educational, psychological support and for the search for alternatives to their personal or work situations.

The Consistory points out that with this new facility, the network of temporary municipal accommodation resources of La Laguna has seven supervised flats and the Clemencia Hardisson center for people in a situation of housing exclusion, which add up to a total of 75 places, which represents an increase of 257%, in two years.

Remember that the municipal network is complemented by other resources and services provided by third-sector entities in the locality and is reinforced, preventively, with social rental programs, traffic pensions and rental aid.

The network has facilities specifically for women, men and families, to which is now added this new resource for young people who leave a center when they come of age or who lack family protection and require support.
